Cougars Fall in Finale to No. 25 Arizona

HOUSTON – The University of Houston baseball team dropped its series finale on Sunday to No. 25 Arizona, 10-6, at Hi Corbett Field.
The Cougars fell to 5-9, while Arizona improved to 10-5.
The Cougars conclude their six-game road swing with a pair of midweek contests at UNLV. The first game is set for Tuesday with first pitch scheduled for 8:05 p.m. CT.
KEY INNINGS
1st | After a leadoff walk and a double put two aboard for the Wildcats, Arizona took a 2-0 lead on a RBI single in the bottom of the first inning.
3rd | The Cougars rallied to tie the game at 2-2. Kobe Hyland reached on an error to open the inning and advanced to second on sacrifice bunt from Kyle Lovelace. Tyler Bielomawicz capitalized with an RBI triple to right field to trim the Arizona lead down to 2-1. One batter later, Rey Mendoza used a bunt to plate Bielomawicz on an RBI infield single to tie the game.
4th | The Wildcats used a two-out RBI single through the right side to regain the lead at 3-2.
5th | Rey Mendoza's first career home run, a solo shot to right field, tied the game at 3-3.
6th | Houston took the lead on Brad Burckel's solo home run to right field, putting the Cougars in front, 4-3. It was the first homer of the year for the sophomore and the second of his career. The Wildcats tied the game in the bottom half of the frame with three straight singles.
7th | The Wildcats took the lead with a five-run seventh inning. A one-out single put Arizona in front for good. The Wildcats loaded the bases and used two bases-loaded hit-by-pitches and two walks to extend their lead.
8th | The Cougars took advantage of an Arizona error to add a run in the top of the eighth. After earning a walk and moving to second on a wild pitch, Burckel game around to score on a fielding error. The Wildcats answered in the eighth with a run on an RBI single to center.
9th | Ryan Hernandez's RBI single with two outs cut the Arizona lead down to 10-6.
HOUSTON NOTES
Offense:
• Arizona outhit the Cougars, 11-7.
• Mendoza finished 2-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored. Mendoza drilled his first career home run on Sunday.
• Burckel had a 2-for-3 effort at the plate, recording a solo home run and scoring twice.
• Bielomawicz finished 1-for-3 with one run scored and a RBI, picking up his first triple of the season.
• Ryan Hernandez and Steven Rivas each logged one hit.
Pitching:
• Senior right-hander Carter Henry (0-2) suffered the loss, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits in one inning of work. Henry allowed one walk and struck out one.
• Sophomore righty Tanner Green made his first career start, throwing 1.2 innings. He allowed three hits and two runs, while walking one.
• Robert Gasser kept the Cougars in the game, pitching 3.1 innings of relief. Gasser struck out four and surrendered two runs on two hits.
• Tristen Bayless (0.2), Isaiah Blaylock (0.0), Jared Pettitte (0.1), Cole Ferguson (0.2) and Randal Garza (0.1) all appeared out of the bullpen as Houston used eight pitches on Sunday.
