CABO SAN LUCAS, Mexico – University of Houston junior Alexander Frances stood in a tie for 15th with a 1-under 70 following the First Round of the Cabo Collegiate at Cabo del Sol on Sunday afternoon.
Competing on the 6,807-yard, par-71 Cove Club Course, Frances drained a pair of birdies in his round to lead Houston. The Stege, Denmark, native began his day off No 4 but quickly moved under par with a birdie on the 490-yar, par-5 fifth hole.
Following five straight pars, Frances drained another birdie on No. 11 before giving a stroke back with his lone bogey of the day on No. 14. He ended his day with seven straight pars to join eight other student-athletes in the tie for 15th.
As a team, the Cougars posted a score of 290 and stood in 12th. The tournament features an elite field with all but one of the 15 teams ranked among the nation's Top 50 with six in the Top 25.
No. 14 Arizona, No, 25 Oklahoma State and No. 13 Baylor were tied for the first-day team lead at 278. No. 9 Arizona State stood in fourth at 281, while No. 20 Vanderbilt and No. 47 Florida State were tied for fifth at 282.
Junior Luke Long and senior Matt Cole were each tied for 25th at even par. Long tied for the team lead with three birdies in Sunday's round, while Cole drained a pair of birdies.
Playing as an individual, freshman Austyn Reily was tied for 39th at 72. Junior Andrew Gibson and sophomore Braxton Watkins were tied for 70th at 78.
Arizona's Trevor Werbylo posted a 66 in Sunday's play to hold the individual lead. Blake Wagoner (Arizona State) stood in second with a 67, while Cooper Dossey (Baylor), Jake Benson (Rice), Daulet Tuleubayev (Stanford), Brian Stark (Oklahoma State) and Johnny Keefer (Baylor) were tied for third with 68s.
The tournament continues with the Second Round, beginning with a 10 a.m. (CST) shotgun start Monday. The Final Round tees off Tuesday morning.

UP NEXT
Following the Cabo Collegiate, the Cougars will compete at the Valspar Collegiate Invitational at Floridian National Golf Club in Palm City, Fla., on March 16-17.
From there, the team will tee off at the Augusta Haskins Award Invitational at Forest Hills Golf Club in Augusta, Ga., on April 4-5.
