
Cougars Take Down Texas State, 5-1

Houston goes for series win Sunday at 2 p.m. CT

The Cougars improved to 3-6, while Texas State dropped to 7-4. Houston jumped out to a 4-0 lead through three innings as the Cougars' pitching staff allowed just one run on five hits in the win.

1st | After Derrick Cherry reached out a walk, Ryan Hernandez gave the Cougars an early 1-0 lead on an RBI triple down the right field line.

3rd | The Cougars plated three runs in the third. After Steven Rivas doubled to open the frame, Hernandez picked up two more RBI as the junior blasted a two-run shot to left field to extend Houston's lead. The junior leads the Cougars with four home runs this season. One batter later, sophomore Ian McMillan recorded his first career home run with a solo shot to left to push Houston's lead to 4-0.

5th | Texas State scratched a run across in the top of the fifth to cut Houston's lead down to 4-1.

6th | After Luke Almendarez reached on an infield single and stole second, catcher Kyle Lovelace allowed the Cougars to extend their lead with an RBI single up the middle to plate the freshman.

7th | In the top of the seventh, Texas State loaded the bases with no outs but Houston's bullpen came to the rescue. After senior lefty Tristen Bayless struck the only batter he faced in his appearance, senior right-hander Carter Henry followed up with a pair of punch outs to keep the UH lead at 5-1.

Offense:
• Hernandez picked up his fourth multi-hit game of the year, finishing 2-for-4 with a home run, triple and three RBI.
• McMillan was 2-for-4 at the plate, recording his first career homer with a solo shot to left field in the third inning.
• Rey Mendoza was 2-for-2 off the bench with two singles. Lovelace finished 1-for-2 with an RBI single in the sixth.
• Almendarez, Derrick Cherry and Rivas all provided one hit and scored one run.
• The Cougars outhit Texas State, 9-5. Â

Pitching:
• Junior lefty Clay Aguilar (1-0) threw 6.0 innings to earn the win, striking out five and allowing one run on 89 pitches. The junior surrendered five hits and just one walk in his third start of the season.
• Entering the game in the top of the seventh with the bases loaded and no outs, Bayless retired the one batter he faced with a strikeout.
• Henry tossed the final 2.2 innings, picking up his first save of the season. The senior struck out five of the eight batters he faced.
• Houston's pitching staff logged 11 strikeouts.
The Cougars conclude their three-game series with the Bobcats on Sunday. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. CT.
