Cougars close out homestand against Bobcats
HOUSTON -- The University of Houston Baseball team takes on Texas State in a three-game series at Don Sanders Field at Schroeder Park starting Friday night.

Friday's action gets underway with a 6:30 p.m. first pitch, while Saturday's and Sunday's contests start at 6:30 p.m. and 2 p.m., respectively. The Cougars lead the all-time series, 31-18.

• Houston dropped its fourth extra-inning game of the season on Tuesday, falling to UTRGV, 6-5, in 12 innings.
• Junior first baseman Ryan Hernandez paced the Cougars last weekend, going 5-for-13 with one double, two home runs, four RBI and six runs scored.
• Hernandez (2), Kobe Hyland, Steven Rivas, and Blake Way all homered against the Penguins. Through seven games, Houston is tied for 28th in the nation, while Hernandez and Rivas are tied for 25th.
• Senior southpaws Brayson Hurdsman and Tristen Bayless recorded standout performances out of the bullpen. Hurdsman tossed four innings of scoreless relief to pick up the win on Opening Day, while Bayless fanned eight batters over 4.1 innings, both career marks.
• Houston is batting .198 as a team and has a 4.13 ERA, compared to opponents' .242 average and 4.10 ERA.
• On Feb. 3, the program announced it would pay tribute to the Altobelli family by wearing a decal "JKA ALTO" with each of their initials on their batting helmets throughout the 2020 season.
• Houston was picked second in The American 2020 Preseason Poll released on Dec. 30. The Cougars finished with 54 points and three first-place votes, second only to ECU, which garnered 62 points and six total votes.
• Houston returns 18 letterwinners and welcomes 17 newcomers to the fold on its 2020 squad. Of those, five offensive starters and two weekend starting pitchers are back from a season ago.
ON TEXAS STATE
• Texas State enters the weekend with a 6-3 record after defeating Rice, 9-2, on Wednesday night in San Marcos.
• The Bobcats won their last weekend series over Lamar, winning the final two games of the series.
• Houston is batting .233 as a team and has a 3.15 ERA, compared to opponents' .215 average and 4.78 ERA.
• Senior designated hitter Will Hollis was selected to the All-Sun Belt Conference Preseason Team.
• The Bobcats were picked to finish third in the Sun Belt West Division behind UT-Arlington and Louisiana-Lafayette.
• The Bobcats are led by first-year head coach Steven Trout.
