Houston Hosts Memphis to Open American Play

Cougars open New Year against Tigers at the Fertitta Center
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Women's Basketball team will open American Athletic Conference play on Jan. 5 at the Fertitta Center against the visiting Memphis Tigers. Tip-off is slated for 3 p.m. and the game will be broadcasted on ESPNU.
GAME NOTES
COUGAR FAST BREAK
• Houston enters Sunday's game with a 7-7 overall record this season after splitting a pair of games at the Fordham Holiday Classic.
• Houston has four players averaging double-digits this season led by Dorian Branch with 11.9 points per game, she is followed by Tatyana Hill who is averaging 11.6 points per game. Dymond Gladney contributes 10.3 points per game followed by Julia Blackshell-Fair providing 10.0 points per game.
• Houston is averaging 64.8 points per game on 39.7 percent shooting from the field and a 26.5 percent mark from beyond the 3-point line. The Cougars allow 66.8 points per game on defense while letting opponents shoot 40.3 percent and 31.6 percent from the field and beyond the arc, respectively.
• Hill leads Houston on the glass, pulling down 6.7 rebounds per contest.
• Houston is a tough team to beat on the glass, averaging 15.7 offensive boards per game which is tied for 27th nationally and third in The American
• Houston has forced 244 turnovers by its opponents this season, with 15 or more forced turnovers in 13 of its 14 games. Under Coach Hughey, Houston has been one of the most active defensive teams in the country over the past two seasons. The Cougars are experts at protecting the rim, entering the game ranked 57th nationally in blocks (57) and 92nd in Blocks Per Game (4.1).

•Memphis is averaging 71.5 points per game on 42.7 percent shooting from the field and 34.1 percent shooting from beyond the arc.
• Memphis enters its 11th season under Head Coach Melissa McFerrin and is led in scoring by Jamirah Shutes who is averaging 15.8 points per game. Dulcy Fankam Mendjiadeu leads the Tigers on the boards with 7.6 rebounds per game, as Shutes leads the squad with 46 assists this season.
