Cougars are 6-0 on year in midweek games
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Softball team wraps up its five-game homestand on Wednesday with a midweek matchup against Lamar at Cougar Softball Stadium.
Having won all six of their midweek contests this season, the Cougars enter the game with a 24-12 record, while the Cardinals sit at 17-20 on the year. Despite Houston holding the all-time series lead of 9-3, the past four contests between the Cougars and Cardinals have been nearly neck-and-neck.
With each team winning two games during that four-game stint, Houston holds the edge in the scoring department, 19-14. In home contests against Lamar, Houston looks to continue its trend of success over the Cardinals, as the Cougars have won five of the six meetings at Cougar Softball Stadium.

After opening up the week with a midweek victory over McNeese, Houston fell to USF in its three-game series against the Bulls. With the win over the Cowgirls in the Wednesday matchup, the Cougars improved to 6-0 on the year in midweek contests.
In the win over McNeese, Houston completed its comeback victory, thanks to a two-out RBI single from junior outfielder Lindsey Stewart in the bottom of the ninth. The Cougars climbed their way back into the game and tied it in the bottom of the seventh, courtesy of a pinch-hit solo home run from sophomore infielder Tierrah Williams.
Senior pitcher Savannah Heebner tossed all nine innings, falling one frame short of tying her career-high. She finished the contest allowing just three hits and striking out five batters, needing only 104 pitches to earn her eighth victory of the season.
The Cougars held their home conference-opener against USF, where junior infielder Sarah Queen broke out for two solo home runs in the game, marking the second time in her career she's blasted a pair of homers in a game. That contest also saw Stewart extend her streak of reaching base to 24 games, with her 1-for-3 outing, but the individual efforts weren't enough as USF took game one 4-2.
Houston's offense was halted in the final two games of the series, as USF won each matchup by a score of 3-0. In the second game, Heebner tossed her 14th complete game of the season, while junior pitcher Trystan Melancon extended her season-long streak of having not allowed more than three earned runs in all nine of her starts.
Hit 'Em Fast, Hit 'Em Hard
Not only has the Houston offense come out firing in its games, the Cougars have pounded their opponents in the opening innings. Heading into the contest with the Cardinals, the Cougars are outscoring their opposition, 53-17, in the first two innings.
The opening frame for Houston has proven to be a valuable one for the team, as the Cougars are 11-0 on the year when they score in the first inning. Overall, the Cougars are 19-2 when scoring first.
MIlestone Tracker
Senior pitcher Savannah Heebner continues to etch her name in the record books, as her 59 career wins ranked second all-time behind only Angel Shamblin (2005-08), who holds the program record with 94 career victories.
