Cougars record 14th shutout of season
The victory against the Cardinals (17-21) ended the Cougars' (25-12) three-game skid, as Houston moved to 7-0 on the year in midweek contests. Houston's 11 hits marked the ninth time this season the Cougars have surpassed the 10-hit plateau in the game.
By blanking Lamar, Houston tallied its 14th shutout of the year and first combined shutout, with freshman pitcher Rachel Hertenberger earning the win. She finished the night surrendering just one hit and one walk, to go along with seven strikeouts in her five innings of work.
Offensively, senior outfielder Sarah Barker tallied a season and game-high three hits, with a home run and two RBIs. She was joined by senior outfielder Maya Thomas and sophomore infielder Tierrah Williams as those with multiple hits in the contest.
KEY INNINGS
1st | After making a diving, highlight grab in the field, senior outfielder Sarah Barker came up to bat in the bottom of the inning and quickly put the Cougars ahead by a score with her second home run of the season.
3rd | The Cougars stretched their lead to three in the bottom of the inning, thanks to a one-out single from senior first baseman Savannah Heebner. Her base-knock to left field brought around junior outfielder Lindsey Stewart and junior infielder Arielle James to give Houston the 3-0 edge.
4th | Houston extended its advantage even further, as a single to left from sophomore infielder Tierrah Williams scored junior infielder Sarah Queen on the play. Once senior outfielder Maya Thomas crossed the plate courtesy of a base-hit up the middle from Barker, the Cougars found themselves ahead by five, having never looked back from that point in route to the 6-0 win.
