Williams Leads Houston at Bayou City Collegiate Classic

Senior tied for seventh at 142 after shooting back-to-back 71s on Monday
PEARLAND, Texas – University of Houston senior Matt Williams fired back-to-back 71s Monday to finish in a tie for seventh at 2-under 142 and lead the Cougars following the first day at the Bayou City Collegiate Classic at Golfcrest Country Club.
Starting his day off No. 1 on the 7,254-yard, par-72 course, Williams overcame a bogey on No. 10 in the First Round to sink birdies on No. 13 and again on No. 17 for his first 71 of the day.
In the afternoon session, the Calgary, Alberta, native made two birdies in a 3-hole stretch on Nos. 3-5 and added another birdie on No. 10 to lead Houston.
As a team, the Cougars posted a score of 586 to finish the first day in eighth. Sam Houston State held the first-day lead at 569 with George Washington (581), UTSA (582), Abilene Christian (583) and Arkansas State (583) rounding out the Top-Five leaders.
Sophomore Alexander Frances was tied for 11th at 1-under 143. The Stege, Denmark, native overcame a 73 in the First Round to shoot 70 in the afternoon.
Frances drained four birdies on his first eight holes and added two birdies in a 3-hole stretch on the back nine at Nos. 14-16.
Competing as an individual, junior Zach Tracy was tied for 29th at 147. Junior Logan Young was tied for 57th at 152, while freshman Braxton Watkins was tied for 63rd at 153. Junior George Gardner and sophomore Andrew Gibson were tied for 70th at 155, while junior Alex Isakson stood in 79th at 160.
Sam Houston State's Luis Carrera held the first-day individual lead at 7-under 137. Zan Luka Stirn (Arkansas State) and Collins Clark (UTSA) were tied for second at 138 with Zac Owens (Wichita State), Williams Holcomb (Sam Houston State) and Jake Benson (Rice) tied for fourth at 141.
Williams joined Adrian Castagnola (George Washington) and Dalton Hankamer (Texas State) in a tie for seventh.

FINAL ROUND PAIRINGS
Tuesday's Final Round tees off at 8 a.m., Tuesday. Houston will compete in groups with student-athletes from Wichita State and Texas State.
Gibson starts the day for the Cougars off No. 1 at 8 a.m., with Watkins (8:09 a.m.), Young (8:18 a.m.), Frances (8:27 a.m.) and Williams (8:36 a.m.) following.
Among the individuals, Tracy begins off No. 10 at 9:12 a.m., with Gardner (9:39 a.m.) and Isakson (9:48 a.m.) following.
