
Houston Set for Southern California Road Swing

Cougars will compete in Highlander Classic before playing at Cal State Fullerton
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Softball team hits the road for a five-game road swing, as the Cougars will compete in the Highlander Classic from March 8-10, before heading to Cal State Fullerton for a midweek contest on March 12.
The Cougars begin this road trip on an absolute tear, having won 12 of their past 13 games, and during that stretch, Houston has outscored its opponents 97-11, posting eight shutouts.
Since the start Houston's run began with a 4-0 win over Louisiana-Monroe (Feb. 17), the Cougars' offense has erupted, averaging 7.5 runs and 8.9 hits per game, while boasting a .363 team batting average and a .513 slugging percentage.
In the circle, Houston's pitching staff has surrendered just 10 earned run over 79 innings pitched, resulting a minuscule team ERA of 0.89. This stretch has also seen a perfect game and a no-hitter from junior pitcher Trystan Melancon.
Highlander Classic / Houston at Cal State Fullerton
Houston continued its dominating stretch and completed a 5-1 mark on the week, which included three run-rule shutouts and outscoring their opponents 42-8 during that six-game span.
After trailing by three to start the game, Houston stormed back to score nine unanswered runs, including six in the bottom of the third, to take down RV/RV Texas A&M by a score of 9-3 in Houston's midweek contest.
In the win over the Aggies, the Cougars saw offensive production from seniors Savannah Heebner and Maya Thomas, along with junior outfielder Lindsey Stewart. All three players led Houston with a game-high two hits apiece. Heeber and freshman outfielder Abby Odneal, who blasted her second home run of the season, each drove in a pair of runs.
The Cougars began the weekend taking down Texas State in a 10-0 decision for the team's seventh shutout of the season. In the win, senior pitcher Presley Bell recorded another overpowering performance in the circle, allowing just one hit in the process.
Following an 0-2 loss to DePaul, Houston bounced back and downed the Blue Demons 8-0 in five innings. In the win, junior pitcher Trystan Melancon tossed the fourth perfect game in program history and just the second ever in The American. She finished the game with seven strikeouts.
Houston put together another impressive performance, as a 9-0 win over Texas Southern marked the Cougars' fourth win of the week. Freshman pitcher Rachel Hertenberger extended her scoreless inning streak to 10, having struck out a career-high eight in the five-inning victory.
The Cougars concluded the weekend defeating Texas State for the second time with their 8-3 victory. In that game, Houston flexed its muscle at the plate, tying a season-high 14 hits in the contest.
Four players reached the multiple-hit mark, including three players who recorded three hits in the game. Junior infielder Kelli Montgomery tied her career-high with three hits. Stewart and junior infielder Arielle James continued their hot starts to the 2019 campaign, as each tallied three hits as well.
Perfection
Just a week after posting the second no-hitter of her career, junior pitcher Trystan Melancon tossed Houston's fourth perfect game in program history and just the second one in The American's history. Melancon's perfect outing in the 8-0 win over DePaul (March 2), marked the program's first since Angel Shamblin threw the third of her career in 2008.
She also became the third pitcher in program history to toss three no-hitters in a career. In Houston's 8-0 win over Northern Illinois (Feb. 23), Melancon threw the second no-hitter of her career and became the fifth pitcher to throw multiple no-hitters in a career.
Abby's Road
Following a week in which she led her team to a 5-1 record, freshman outfielder Abby Odneal earned The American Athletic Conference Player of the Week for games played through March 5. With the accolade, Odneal became the second freshmen under head coach Kristin Vesely to earn the honor, joining Tierrah Williams, who received award in 2018.
In six games played, the Missouri City, Texas, native boasted a .500 batting average, drove in six runs and scored six times to go along with a home run. She tallied at least one hit in five of her six games.
Odneal began the week launching the second home run of her career with her two-run shot that cemented a 9-3 win for the Cougars over Texas A&M. At the Red and White Showcase, Odneal put together a perfect outing at the plate with her career-high four hits in Houston's second game against DePaul.
