Bell suffers first loss of the season
RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The University of Houston Softball team opened its Southern California road trip on Friday being edged out by UC Riverside by a score of 1-0 in eight innings.
Heading into Saturday's second day of the Highlander Classic, the Cougars sit at 16-7 on the season, as the Highlanders move to 7-12. With Friday's results, Houston suffered its first loss of the year away from Cougar Softball Stadium.
Senior pitcher Presley Bell went the distance for the sixth time this season, finishing the day allowing just four hits and one walk, to go along with a pair of strikeouts. By not allowing any earned runs, Bell's ERA on the season is drops to 0.50.

KEY INNINGS
1st | Houston began the game threating to score early, as a couple of base hits from junior outfielder Lindsey Stewart and freshman Abby Odneal put a pair of runners on with nobody out. After junior Sarah Queen drew a two-out walk to load the bases, the Cougars were knocking at the door, but were unable to plate any runs in the inning.
5th | The pitcher's duel continued, as the score remained tied at zero thanks to senior pitcher Presley Bell ending the inning with a strikeout looking.
7th | The Cougars battled to strike first in the game, having loaded the bases in the inning. Once senior first baseman Savannah Heebner led the inning off with a walk, senior catcher Brooke Vannoy used a sacrifice bunt to move to her second. Stewart then lined a single to center and the Cougars had a pair of runners on with just one out. After Odneal was hit by a pitch, Houston had the bases loaded, but the Cougars couldn't string together the timely hits to cross the plate.
8th | A single down the left field line from the Highlanders scored a run, as UC Riverside took the 1-0 win.
