PALM CITY, Fla. – University of Houston junior Logan Young posted a 69 in Sunday's First Round at the Valspar Collegiate Invitational to lead the Cougars and tie for 13th at Floridian National Golf Club.
Starting his day off No. 11 on the 6,921-yard, par-71 course, Young made two straight pars before sinking the first of five birdies on the day. Following seven straight pars, the Normangee, Texas, native drained back-to-back birdies on Nos. 3-4.
Fighting through a double bogey on the par-5 5th hole, Young rallied with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 6-7 and closed out the round with par on two of his last three holes.
As a team, the Cougars posted a score of 288 to finish the first day in 10th.
Due to the threat of weather, teams will play 36 holes on Monday with the Second Round beginning at 7:20 a.m. (CDT)
The tournament features 14 of the nation's Top-15 teams, including six of the Top 10. No. 30 Florida State, No. 31 South Carolina and No. 6 Wake Forest each recorded scores of 278 to tie for the first-day lead. No. 1 Oklahoma State stood in fourth at 279, while No. 13 Auburn was in fifth at 281.
No 27 Texas A&M (284), No. 23 Baylor (284), No. 3 Vanderbilt (285) and No. 9 Georgia Tech (285) rounded out the Top-10 leaders.
Oklahoma State and No. 1 player Matthew Wolff held the individual lead after shooting a 6-under 65. Texas A&M's Chandler Phillips, Florida State's John Pak, Wake Forest's Cameron Young and Baylor's Braden Bailey were tied for second at 66.
Senior Matt Williams posted an even-par 71 on the 7,114-yard, par-71 course and was tied for 23rd. Sophomore Alexander Frances was tied for 30th at 72 while senior Zach Tracy was tied for 67th at 76. Freshman Braxton Watkins was tied for 74th at 79.
Competing as individuals, sophomore Andrew Gibson stood in 73rd at 78 after the first day, while senior Carson Cavner was tied for 77th at 80.
The tournament features 12 nationally ranked teams with five of the Top 10 and eight of the Top 20, including No. 1 Oklahoma State, which won the team championship last year.
Teams will play 18 holes each day through Tuesday on the 7,114-yard, par-71 course.

PAIRINGS
For Monday's Second Round, Houston will compete in groups with student-athletes from Texas and LSU.
Watkins begins for the Cougars at 8 a.m. (CDT), off No. 10 with Tracy (8:08 a.m. CDT), Frances (8:16 a.m. CDT), Williams (8:24 a.m. CDT) and Young (8:32 a.m. CDT) following.
UP NEXT
Following the Valspar Collegiate Invitational, the Cougars will travel to compete in the 3M Augusta Invitational at Forest Hills Golf Club in Augusta, Ga. on April 6-7.
From there, the team will return to Texas to compete in its regular-season finale at the Bayou City Intercollegiate at Golfcrest Country Club in Pearland, Texas, on April 15-16.
