Cougars meet Bulls for the first time this season
HOUSTON – The Houston Cougar Women's Basketball team returns to the road for an 1 p.m. meeting with USF, Sunday in Tampa.
Sunday's contest will be aired on ESPN2 and fans can hear the contest against the Bulls live via the home for Houston Women's Basketball Radio, UHCougars.com/wbbradio. Live statistics are also available through SideArm Stats, and the official Twitter account of Houston Women's Basketball, @UHCougarWBB, will offer updates throughout the game.
THE STARTING FIVE
Here are five names, numbers, news items and storylines you need to know about Saturday's American Athletic Conference game against USF:
TAKE TWO – The Cougars will face USF for the first of two meetings this season, looking for their first win over the Bulls under Head Coach Ronald Hughey.
CLEANING THE GLASS – Senior forward Serithia Hawkins has maintained a presence in the paint for Houston. Hawkins is averaging 7.4 boards a game, and is on pace to become only the third Cougar with 900+ boards.
FROM DOWNTOWN – The Cougars continue to be a 3-point threat under Hughey. After setting the school record for 3-pointers made in each of the last two seasons, Houston has made 164 triples so far in 2018-19.
SCORE OFTEN, SCORE FAST – Houston is a tough team offensively, currently ranking second in the conference in scoring offense with 70.9 ppg, only second to UConn.
H-TOWN LOCKDOWN – Houston continues to play lockdown defense this season. The Cougars have forced at least 15 turnovers in 20 of its 22 games and their 20.91 forced per game ranks 25th nationally.
SERIES vs. USF
Sunday's meeting is the 19th all-time between the two teams in a series that dates back to 1997. Houston trails 6-13 all-time in the series, losing the last six meetings, the last time the Cougars defeated USF was Jan. 16, 2005.
ABOUT THE COUGARS
Houston enters Sunday's game with an 11-11 overall record and a 5-4 mark in American Athletic Conference play. The Cougars have posted a 7-6 record on the road this season.
Houston's Jasmyne Harris paces the Cougars in points per game with 16.2 per contest, while Angela Harris also scores in double figures at 10.4 per night. Harris scored a season-high 23 points in the win over Wichita State, becoming the third Houston player to reach 1,000 career points this season against Temple on Feb. 5. Octavia Barnes has scored at least one three in the last 13 games for the Cougars, Dorian Branch has led the Cougars in scoring over the last two contest, posting 17 points against SMU and Temple.
Houston is averaging 70.9 points per game on 40.6 percent shooting from the field and a 30.1 percent mark from beyond the 3-point line. The Cougars allow 69.9 points per game on defense while letting opponents shoot 41.4 percent and 31.2 percent from the field and beyond the arc, respectively.
Serithia Hawkins leads Houston on the glass, pulling down 7.4 rebounds per game after matching a season-high with back-to-back games of 12 against Wichita State and Cincinnati. She recently became the sixth Cougar in program history to score 1,000 points and pull down 800 rebounds.
Houston has been one of the most active defensive teams in the country this season. The Cougars rank third in The American in steals (228), as well as in steals per game (10.4), and second in turnovers forced per game (20.91). The Cougars' steal numbers rank 24th and 40th in the nation, respectively, while the turnovers forced average places them 25th in the NCAA.
