Houston Hosts Tulane in Education Day Showdown

Cougars square up with Tulane for lone meeting of the season
HOUSTON – The Houston Cougar Women's Basketball team returns home to the Fertitta Center for its lone meeting of the season with American Athletic Conference foe, Tulane, in a 12 p.m. contest at the Fertitta Center Wednesday.
Wednesday's contest will serve as Education Day and the contest can be seen on ESPN3 and heard live by fans via the home for Houston Women's Basketball Radio, UHCougars.com/wbbradio. Live statistics are also available through SideArm Stats, and the official Twitter account of Houston Women's Basketball, @UHCougarWBB, will offer updates throughout the game.

Here are five names, numbers, news items and storylines you need to know about Saturday's American Athletic Conference game against Tulane:
NAIL BITERS – The Cougars will face a Tulane team that has won its last five games by an average of 4.5 points
MILESTONE MOMO – Senior forward Serithia Hawkins is a threat all over the floor for Houston Hawkins is averaging 7.4 boards a game, and recently became only the second Cougar with 900+ boards and 1000 boards.
FROM DOWNTOWN – The Cougars continue to be a 3-point threat under Hughey. After setting the school record for 3-pointers made in each of the last two seasons, Houston has made 174 triples so far in 2018-19. The Cougars are five three-pointers from second-place all-time in single-season made three-point baskets.
SCORE OFTEN, SCORE FAST – Houston is a tough team offensively, currently ranking second in the conference in scoring offense with 69.9 points per game, only second to UConn.
H-TOWN LOCKDOWN – Houston continues to play lockdown defense this season. The Cougars have forced at least 15 turnovers in 22 of its 24 games and their 20.63 forced per game ranks 25th nationally.
SERIES vs. TULANE
Wednesday's meeting is the 43rd all-time between the two teams in a series that dates back to 1978.
Houston trails 15-28 in the all-time in the series, winning two of the last three, including a 72-48 win last season in Houston.
ABOUT THE COUGARS
Houston enters Wednesday's game with a 13-11 overall record and a 7-4 mark in American Athletic Conference play. The Cougars have posted a 5-5 record at home this season, winning their last four.
Houston's Jasmyne Harris paces the Cougars in points per game with 16.2 per contest, while Angela Harris also scores in double figures at 10.1 per night. Angela Harris scored a season-high 23 points in the win over Wichita State, becoming the third Houston player to reach 1,000 career points this season against Temple on Feb. 5. Octavia Barnes has scored at least one three-pointer in the last 15 games for the Cougars; posting double-figures in four of the last six contest. Dorian Branch has emerged as a offensive threat for the Houston, dropping a career-high 21 points against ECU and earning American Weekly honor roll recognition.
Houston is averaging 69.9 points per game on 40.6 percent shooting from the field and a 30.2 percent mark from beyond the 3-point line. The Cougars allow 67.6 points per game on defense while letting opponents shoot 40.7 percent and 31.6 percent from the field and beyond the arc, respectively.
Serithia Hawkins leads Houston on the glass, pulling down 7.5 rebounds per game after matching a season-high with back-to-back games of 12 against Wichita State and Cincinnati. She recently became the second Cougar in program history to score 1,000 points and pull down 900 rebounds.
Houston has been one of the most active defensive teams in the country this season. The Cougars rank third in The American in steals (244), as well as in steals per game (10.2), and second in turnovers forced per game (20.63). The Cougars' steal numbers rank 38th and 40th in the nation, respectively, while the turnovers forced average places them 43rd in the NCAA.

Tulane enters Wednesday's contest with a 15-10 overall record and a 5-7 mark in American Athletic Conference play. Tulane most recently lost to Memphis in a 65-59 decision at home. Tulane is 4-4 when playing on the road this season.
The Green Wave has one player averaging double figures in scoring this season, Krystal Freeman scores 13.8 per game to lead the team. Tulane has dropped four of its last five games.
Tulane is allowing opponents to score 58.3 points per game, allowing 35.5 percent shooting from the field and 25.3 percent from long-range.
