HOW IT HAPPENED
Houston got out to a fast start, behind a strong effort from newcomer Maya Jones on both ends of the floor. Jones helped the Cougars build an early 11-5 lead at the midway point of the first quarter after capitalizing off of Yellow Jacket missteps with two steals and back-to-back lay-ups in the opening minutes of play.
Georgia Tech climbed its way back into the game, by way of a 9-2 run to close out the first frame, taking a 16-15 lead at the first quarter break.
The Yellow Jackets widened their lead in the second quarter, outscoring Houston 26-1 in the quarter, to take a 42-16 lead at the half.
Houston tried its best to climb its way back in the game in the third quarter as Tatyana Hill made her presence known in the paint. Hill led the Cougars in scoring with a team-high seven points in the third quarter. Georgia Tech sustained its lead, heading into the fourth quarter with a 53-24 lead.
Hill continued to be a force for the Cougars in the paint, as the squad struggled to get things going from behind the arc. With less than three minutes remaining Dorian Branch connected on the Cougars first 3-pointer of the night, followed by newcomer Bria Patterson who went 1-of-1 from three-point range.
Although Houston forced 23 Georgia Tech turnovers, it would not be enough to derail the Yellow Jackets.
