HOW IT HAPPENED
Houston got out to a quick start against the Lions, jumping out to an early 10-2 lead with six minutes remaining in the first quarter. Tatyana Hill scored six of her 13 points in the opening frame, making an immediate impact for Houston in the paint, helping the squad accrue a 22-10 lead at the break.
The Cougars remained steady in the second quarter, as Jasmyne Harris continued to be a force with a team-high 12 points entering the frame. SLU would try to get in a rhythm and match the Cougars with 19 points in the quarter as Dymond Gladney and Julia Blackshell-Fair combined for eight points before the halftime break.
Gladney would ignite the Cougars off the bench in the third quarter, along with newcomer Maya Jones who held her own in the lane. Gladney and Jones combined for nine of Houston's 21 third quarter points, as Houston held SLU to 17 points in the frame and forced three Lion turnovers.
With 10 minutes to play in regulation the Cougar defense continued to control the tempo as Houston held onto a healthy lead. Jones and Hill continued to allow little post action from SLU. The Lions took advantage of Cougar missteps, managing to outscore the Cougars 19-16 in the frame, but ultimately falling to the Cougars 78-65.
