HOW IT HAPPENED
The game proved to be physical from the very start as both teams battled back and forth for the opening five minutes of play. The Lobos would take advantage of Houston missteps and go on a 5-0 run to shift the momentum in favor of the home team, ultimately taking a 23-13 lead at the quarter break.
Houston began to turn things around on the offensive end as Dorian Branch scored four timely points in the second quarter to get things going for UH. A 7-5 run from the Cougars in the opening five minutes of the frame, would put Houston right on the heels of New Mexico heading into the first media timeout. The Lobos would nearly hold Houston scoreless in the final two minutes of the quarter, ultimately taking a 43-26 lead at the break.
The Cougars opened the third quarter with back-to-back buckets on their first two possessions. New Mexico would counter with a 6-2 scoring run to take 58-36 lead with under five minutes left in the quarter. Houston couldn't quite get a handle on the Lobo offense, getting outscored 14-9 in the finals five minutes of the frame as Houston trailed, 70-45 heading into the final 10 minutes of regulation.
The Cougars came out with a bang in the fourth quarter, holding UNM scoreless for over two minutes and going on an 8-0 run to open the frame. Dymond Gladney and Tatyana Hill anchored the Cougars as they combined for 10 of Houston's 26 points in the frame. Houston would find its rhythm from behind-the-arc late, hitting two consecutive three-points with under three minutes to play to cut the Lobo lead to 13. A three-pointer from Branch would get Cougars within 10, but Houston ultimately fall to New Mexico 81-71.
