Barnes and Hill record second straight double-digit efforts
ORLANDO – The Houston Cougar Women's Basketball team dropped a hard fought contest to American foe UCF, 56-58 in Orlando Wednesday evening at CFE Arena.
The Cougars got out to hot start knocking down back-to-back jumpers and a three from Angela Harris to take an early 8-2 lead. The Cougars showcased their fast-paced aggressive style of defense early one, forcing three UCF turnovers before the first media timeout. Midway through the first frame, UCF started to heat up, going on a 7-0 run to tie things up 16-16. With less than a minute in the first quarter, Dymond Gladney would find a lane and connect on a driving lay-up to give the Cougars a 20-18 lead at the end of the first frame.
Houston came out strong defensively in the second frame, picking up eight turnovers. Octavia Barnes would knock down a pull-up three from long-range to give Houstona 25-23 lead halfway through the second quarter. Serithia Hawkins came through for the Cougars, hitting timely shots down the stretch for, knocking down a pair of jumpshots, including a late three-pointer to give Houston a boost as they headed into the break trailing 30-31.
Houston came out energized to start the third quarter, scoring on four straight possessions. Hawkins knocked down a jumper, followed by back-to-back lay-ups from Hill,capped off by a three-pointer from Dorian Branch before the first media timeout. A 6-0 run from UCF narrowed the Houston lead to one with under four minutes remaining in the third quarter. Branch knocked down a lay-up following a Houston timeout, to break a three minute Cougar scoring drought. Both teams would trade baskets, but a pair of made free throws from Barnes would give Houston a 45-44 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.
An early 6-0 run from the Knights to open the fourth quarter gave UCF a 51-47 advantage heading into the first timeout of the fourth frame. A pair of made jumpers and a three-pointer from Barnes knocked cut the UCF lead to two points with under a minute to play. Houston regained possession with 24 seconds left, down three points when Barnes would go to the line for two and Houston trailing by three. Barnes knocked down both free throws to make it a two-point game. A last second shot by Julia Blackshell-Fair rolled off the rim at the buzzer to close the game.

UCF: The Knights had two players reach double figures in the game. Kayla Thigpen led UCF with 16 points, Masseny Kaba had added 11. Kaba also led the team in rebounding with five.

Houston will return home for an alumni weekend matchup with conference rival SMU. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m. at the Fertitta Center. The Cougars will then head out for a two-game roadswing with stops at Temple (Feb. 5) and USF (Feb. 10).
