Houston to Face Houston Baptist and Lamar Opening Weekend

Cougars face in-state foes to open 2018-19 season
HOUSTON – Houston will open its second season under Head Coach Diego Bocanegra when its travels across town to Houston Baptist on Aug. 17 and then to Lamar on Aug. 19. Both matches are slated for 7 p.m. starts.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW
- The Cougars lead the all-time series between Houston and Houston Baptist 3-1-2. The last two contests ended in ties; 1-1 (2OT) in 2014 and 0-0 (2OT) in 2013.
- Houston is 1-0 in season openers under Bocanegra after defeating Texas Southern last year on Aug. 18.
- The all-time series between Lamar and Houston is tied 0-0-1 after both teams tied last season 0-0 after two overtime periods.
- Jazmin Grant returns to Houston for her sophomore season as a Preseason All-Conference selection.
- Adding to the offensive firepower for the Cougars is sophomore Mia Brascia. Brascia closed out her freshman season with four goals, including the game winning goal against then-No. 21 Cincinnati.
- Defensively juniors Julissa DePaoli and Lauren Flowers, along with senior Sevie Cole return to help anchor a backline that posted three shutouts last season. Both Flowers and Cole registered an assist each last season.
- Senior goalkeeper Rachel Estopare returns for the Cougars after recording 92 saves last season. Estopare was credited for two shutouts last season, earning two Goalkeeper of the Week honors.
- Houston welcomes 13 newcomers to campus in a recruiting class that features players from California, Colorado, Florida, Texas and New Zealand.
- Houston Baptist enters its 13th season under Head Coach Misty Jones.
- HBU closed its 2017 slate with a 7-7-3 overall record, including a 6-3-2 mark in Southland play. The Huskies advanced to the Southland Conference Tournament where they fell in the opening round to Central Arkansas.
- The Huskies return 14 letterwinners, including second team All-Conference selections from last season Baylii Bieke and Autumn Wildung.
SCOUTING THE CARDINALS
- Lamar enters its third season under Head Coach Steve Holeman.
- The Cardinals closed out last season with an 18-4-1 overall record, including a 10-1-0 mark in Southland play, winning the Southland Conference regular-season and tournament titles.
- Lamar advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history where it fell to then-No. 6 Texas A&M in the opening round.
- Lamar returns 11 letterwinners from last season including SLC Newcomer of the Year and First Team All-SLC selection Kelso Peskin, First Team selection Lucy Ashworth and second team selection Amelia Fullmer.
CELEBRATING 20 YEARS
- The Houston Soccer program is excited to celebrate 20 years of Houston soccer this season. The team unveiled a logo on June 14 that represents 20 years of Houston soccer. The logo is featured on one of the three uniforms that the Cougars will wear throughout the season.
