Cougars host first of three games inside H&PE Arena Friday
HOUSTON – The -/RV Houston Cougar Women's Basketball team returns home to host its home opener against Georgia Tech, on Friday at 7 p.m. CT, inside H&PE Arena on the campus of Texas Southern.
Fans can hear the 2018-19 season opener live via Houston's home for Women's Basketball Radio, UHCougars.com/wbbradio. A live stream of Friday's game will also be available courtesy of Houston Athletics All-Access and can be found by clicking HERE. A subscription is required for Houston All-Access. Home Opener – Friday's contest marks the first of three games inside H&PE Arena for Houston. The Cougars will use Texas Southern's gym for contests against Boston College and New Mexico as well.
Series vs. Georgia Tech – Houston and Georgia Tech will meet for the first time in their respective histories on Monday. The Yellow Jackets are Hughey's second opponent from the ACC in his tenure.
Deep Defense – Houston will look to continue its stifling defense from beyond the 3-point line after holding Cal to 12.5 percent. That number ranks 14th in the country and first in The American.
Taking Care of It – Houston turned the ball over just 14 times in the season opener against Cal, which ranks 45th in the country and second in the conference.
Home Cooking – Houston is 33-10 historically when playing their first home game. Head Coach Ronald Hughey has won each of Houston's last two home openers.
SERIES vs. GEORGIA TECH
Houston and Georgia Tech will meet for the first time on the hardwood Friday.
The Cougars hold an 0-1 record against teams from the ACC under Head Coach Ronald Hughey, and will welcome Boston College to H&PE Arena on Nov. 18.
ABOUT THE COUGARS
Houston enters the contest with an 0-1 record after a heartbreaking, 80-79 loss at 24/RV California on Tuesday in Berkeley, Calif.
Houston had four players reach double-figures in the season-opener, including junior Jasmyne Harris, who paced the Cougars with 17 points. Junior Angela Harris and senior Serithia Hawkins added 12 points each, while junior Dorian Branch scored 10.
Houston's 79 points in the contest came by way of 44.8 percent shooting from the field and 23.8 percent from beyond the 3-point line. Conversely, the Cougars held Cal to 43.3 percent from the field and 12.5 percent from deep, which ranks 14th in the country and first in The American in the early season.
Branch led a balanced Houston rebounding effort on the glass, pulling in a team-leading five rebounds in the opener. Angela Harris and freshman Tatyana Hill each pulled down four rebounds apiece, but the Cougars were outrebounded by the Golden Bears, 43-29.
Houston continued its trend of strong defensive play under Head Coach Ronald Hughey with some lockdown defense at Cal. Houston forced the Golden Bears to turn the ball over 21 times including 13 in the first half. Jasmyne Harris led the team with two of their five steals in the game.
SCOUTING THE YELLOW JACKETS
Georgia Tech will head to Houston for its first contest of the 2018-19 season after a trip to the WNIT Quarterfinals a season ago. The Yellow Jackets defeated Coastal Georgia, 92-46, in exhibition play earlier this month.
In the exhibition game, five different Yellow Jackets scored in double figures including Lorela Cubaj, Elizabeth Balogun and Francesca Pan, who each led the squad with 17 points apiece. Liz Dixon finished the night with 13 points, while Daijah Jefferson added 10.
In the exhibition, the Yellow Jackets shot 51.3 percent from the field and connected on 30 percent of their 3-pointers. On the defensive end, Georgia Tech allowed Coastal Georgia to shoot just 35.6 percent from the field, however the Mariners shot 46.2 percent (6-of-13) from beyond the 3-point line.
Coastal Georgia was no match for the Yellow Jackets on the boards, where Georgia Tech held a 45-27 advantage, including an 18-4 mark on the offensive glass. Anne Francoise Diouf led the squad with nine rebounds in 17 minutes, while Dixon added eight and Kierra Fletcher pulled down six.
