Serithia Hawkins tallies 20th career double-double in 100th career game
Fort Myers, Fla. – The Houston Cougar Women's Basketball team mounted a furious comeback in the fourth quarter, but ultimately fell 76-71 at Florida Gulf Coast on Wednesday.
Florida Gulf Coast raced out to a double-digit lead early in the contest, scoring the first 12 points of the game. Keri Jewett-Giles opened the scoring with a layup before Tytionia Adderly added the next five. Jewett-Giles would score again on the next possession, before Nasrin Ulel buried a 3-pointer ahead of Houston's first point of the contest.
Houston would not connect on its first bucket of the game until the 4:44 mark in the first quarter, but after Angela Harris scored on a 3-pointer, Houston rattled off eight of the final 12 points. Following an Eagle bucket, Myyah West finished the quarter with back-to-back layups to cut the lead to 18-8 after one quarter of play. Houston shot just 18.8 percent (3-of-16) in the first quarter, while FGCU made eight of its 20 shots (40.0 percent).
The Cougars cut the lead to eight on a Julia Blackshell-Fair layup to open the second quarter, but Florida Gulf Coast would score 10 of the next 12 to push the lead to 16 with 7:23 left in the half. The two teams would trade buckets over the next three minutes, however FGCU would close the period on a 9-2 run to grab their largest lead of the night at 43-22.
Houston's defense found its form in the second half, and the Cougars grabbed the first six points of the third quarter thanks to a free throw from Jasmyne Harris and five-straight points from Angela Harris to cut the lead to 43-30 with 8:32 remaining. Neither team would score for nearly three minutes, and after a pair of Florida Gulf Coast free throws, Houston cut the lead to 11 at 45-34 with an Alyssa Okoene jumper and a pair from the line for Dorian Branch.
Florida Gulf Coast would regain their stroke in the second-half of the third quarter. Despite their first basket of the period coming at the 4:05 mark, the Eagles would connect on seven straight field goals to end the quarter and rebuild the lead to 61-43 with just 10 minutes to play.
Houston had one final gasp in the fourth quarter, where the defense would hold Florida Gulf Coast without a field goal for the first 8:47 of the period. Serithia Hawkins opened the quarter with a layup before Jewett-Giles knocked down a pair from the line for FGCU. From there, Houston would go on a 17-0 run to pull within one.
Angela Harris started the run with a layup before Hawkins would knock down two from the line. After a free throw from Jasmyne Harris a minute later, Angela Harris knocked down a 3-pointer, which was followed by a bucket from Branch, two more from Serithia Hawkins and a layup from Blackshell-Fair to bring the score to 63-62 with 2:39 remaining in the game.
From there, the teams would trade a pair from the line, before Ulel knocked down a big 3-pointer to extend the lead back to four at 70-66. Following an offensive foul call on the other end, Houston's bench picked up a technical foul, and the Eagles extended the lead out of reach to 74-66 with just 27 seconds remaining.
