HOUSTON - University of Houston Men's Golf senior Kyle Pilgrim added another accolade to his impressive trophy case Thursday when he was named to the Capital One Academic All-District 7 At-Large Team, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America. As a First-Team honoree, Pilgrim advances to the Capital One Academic All-America Team ballot, where First-, Second- and Third-Team honorees will be selected later this month.
In the classroom, Pilgrim owns a 3.91 grade-point average in accounting in the Honors College and will graduate this spring. He was a two-time member of the Conference USA Commissioner's Honor Roll, was named to the 2013-14 American Athletic Conference All-Academic Team and is expected to receive the latter honor again later this summer.
He was named a 2013-14 Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar and received the 2012-13 C-USA Academic Medal with a GPA of 3.75 or higher.
Pilgrim has been equally impressive on the course. This season, he has posted a 73.52 scoring average this season with 11 rounds of par or better to rank third in both categories. He has enjoyed two top-10 finishes and finished among the top-13 leaders in each of his last three tournaments.
He has recorded six top-10 finishes and 13 top-20 showings during his career and won the individual title at the 2013 Fighting Irish Gridiron Classic. At that tournament, he fired a career-low 66 in the Final Round, becoming only the ninth player in school history to shoot 66 or lower in the third round or later of any event.
Thursday's Academic All-District announcement came in the middle of the First Round at the NCAA Lubbock Regional. Pilgrim led four Cougars who posted sub-par scores with an opening round 66 to stand in second place after the first 18 holes and tie a school record for low round in NCAA Regional play.
With his NCAA Regional appearance this week, Pilgrim became only the 14th player in Houston Men's Golf's storied history to compete in 3+ NCAA Regionals during his career.
Pilgrim was joined on the Capital One Academic All-District 7 team by Erik Adamson (Denver, lacrosse), Louis Bemberg (Lamar, golf); Cory Bowersox (Texas, swimming); Lucas Fumagalli (Air Force, tennis); Sam Iftikhar (New Mexico, tennis); Larkin Jacobson (Denver, ice hockey); Ethan Lottman (Nebraska, gymnastics), Rune Oedegaard (Colorado, skiing) and Christian Otto (New Mexico, skiing).
