HUMBLE, Texas - University of Houston sophomore Kyle Pilgrim was one of three Cougars to post sub-par round during Saturday's Second Round at the Bayou City Collegiate Championship at Redstone Golf Club.
A day after firing a career-low 68 in the First Round, Pilgrim followed that effort with a 1-under-par 71 on the 6,982-yard course and stood in a tie for third at 140. The Colleyville, Texas, finished his round Saturday with four birdies and three bogeys, his first of the tournament.
"Kyle played another very solid round and has himself in contention to win his first college tournament," director of golf Jonathan Dismuke said. "We want guys to be in that situation. This will be a great experience for him, and I look forward to seeing how he does."
Juniors Bryn Flanagan and Curtis Reed each posted 69s for the team's lowest rounds of the day. Reed stood in a tie for 14th at 143, while Flanagan moved into a tie for 33rd with freshman Vincent Martino at 146.
After bogeying his first hole of the day, Reed quickly settled down and eventually drained birdies on the 16th and third holes. He posted a nice end to his Second Round with an eagle on the 545-yard, par-5 eight hole to finish with a five-stroke improvement from his first 18 holes.
Flanagan converted birdies on three of four holes early in his round and endured only one bogey on the back nine for an eight-stroke improvement from his First-Round score.
Junior Wesley McClain added a 71 on Saturday and was tied for 27th at 145 after sinking three birdies on his back nine. Other Cougars in action were sophomore Roman Robledo (147, t-40th) and junior Jesse Droemer (156, t-77th).
"We were more relaxed. In the First Round, we were a little too uptight," Dismuke said. "We made a few more putts and had several low scores. We played more like ourselves today."
As a team, the Cougars fired the second-lowest round of the day at 6-under-par 282. That mark trailed only the 274 by tournament leader and third-ranked Texas. No. 37 Baylor (572) and Charlotte (574) stood ahead of the Cougars with Louisiana Tech (576), No. 43 South Carolina (580), Chattanooga (580), East Carolina (585), Lamar (587), UTSA (588) and New Mexico State (588) rounding out the top-11 leaders.
Texas grabbed a 13-stroke lead in the team standings after seeing all five members of its starting lineup post sub-par scores. Competing as an individual for the Longhorns, Brax McCarty, the tournament's 36-hole leader, fired a 69 Saturday to stand two strokes ahead of teammate Julio Vegas and three strokes in front of Pilgrim and teammate Toni Hakula.
