EL PASO, Texas - The top-seeded University of Houston women's basketball team went cold over the final four minutes to fall to Tulane by a score of 70-60 in the 2011 Buick Conference USA Championship semifinals Friday afternoon at Don Haskins Arena. The Cougars (26-5, 16-0) had their school-record 17-game winning streak snapped and dropped their first contest in over two months.
Houston held a 59-58 lead with 4:20 remaining, but couldn't buy another bucket for the remainder of the contest as Tulane (22-9, 9-7) outscored the Cougars 12-1 down the stretch to seal the upset.
Porsche Landry provided the lone highlight of the day, becoming the 21st member of Houston's 1,000-point club with a 20-point effort. Landry was 9-of-20 from the field, including two 3-pointers, while handing out six assists in 34 minutes.
Lesslee Mason registered her second-consecutive double-double and ninth of the season with 16 points and 10 rebounds in 35 minutes of action.
The Cougars were without two-time C-USA Player of the Year Courtney Taylor for much of the contest due to foul trouble. Taylor was limited to just four points to go with nine rebounds in only 16 minutes, and recorded her first points of the game with 9:13 left in the second half.
Houston trailed at the half for the third time in the last four contests at 37-31 as both Taylor and Brittney Scott, who combined for 32.1 points per game entering the contest, were held scoreless.
Landry opened up the second half with a 3-point bucket to cut the deficit in half, and Scott connected on her lone triple of the afternoon to close to within two points at the 17:29 mark.
Landry reached her career milestone with a layup at the 15:45 mark, and after another Landry layup, Lesslee Mason converted a 3-point play for the game's first tie with 11:57 remaining.
Landry struck again on the ensuing possession to give Houston its first lead of the contest, and after Taylor got on the board for the first time at the 9:13 mark, Brittany Mason stroked a 3-pointer to give Houston its largest lead at two points with 8:56 left to play.
The lead would change hands five more times over the next four minutes before Houston's dry spell sunk the Cougars.
Houston will find out its NCAA Tournament fate on Monday at 6:00 p.m. CT on the NCAA Women' Basketball Selection Show on ESPN.
NOTES
*Houston's school-record 17-game winning streak was snapped with Friday's loss. It was only the team's second loss in the year 2011 and the first since a 69-60 setback at Lamar on Jan. 4.
*The Cougars made their sixth appearance in the C-USA Championship semifinals, falling to 1-5 all-time in C-USA Championship semifinal games.
*Houston fell to 0-3 all-time against Tulane at the Conference USA Championship. This was the first meeting in the league's annual postseason tournament since 2007.
*Tulane also snapped a six-game losing streak to the Cougars.
*With 16 points and a team-high 10 rebounds, senior forward Lesslee Mason recorded her ninth double-double of the season and the 15th of her career. It also was her second straight double-double at the Buick Conference USA Championship.
*With 20 points, junior point guard Porsche Landry became the 21st player in Houston history to score 1,000 points during her career. Landry now has 1,006 points to rank 21st in school career history.

*With Landry reaching the 1,000-point threshold, it marks only the third time in Houston history that three 1,000-point scorers (Courtney Taylor - 1,667, Brittney Scott - 1,498) have played together at the same time, as the feat was also accomplished during the 1978-79 and 1979-80 seasons.
