HOUSTON - The University of Houston women's basketball team is set to take to the road for only the second time this season when it meets UTSA at 2 p.m., Sunday at Convocation Center in San Antonio, Texas.
Houston looks to regroup from its recent skid after a rash of injuries has forced the Cougars to play with only seven student-athletes the past four contests.
Senior guard Roxana Button has stepped up to lead the Cougars this season, averaging more than 10 points higher than her career average with 17.4 points per game. Button competed in her 100th-straight contest in Thursday's loss to TCU and needs just two 3-pointers for 100 in her career, which ranks sixth in school history.
Freshman guard Danielle Parks has tallied 24 points and drained five 3-pointers over the last two contests to rank third on the squad with 5.8 points per game, while fellow freshman Terran Alford paces the team with 8.7 rebounds per game.
ABOUT UTSA
The Roadrunners hold a 2-5 overall record with both victories coming at home against Florida International and Detroit.
UTSA has struggled offensively through the first seven contests, averaging 52.1 points while shooting only 29 percent from the field and 18 percent from 3-point range. Defensively, the Roadrunners have allowed only 63.7 points per contest while forcing 19.4 turnovers to go with 9.0 steals and 3.3 blocks per game.
Freshman guard Ashley Spaletta leads UTSA with 9.3 points, while fellow freshman Mannasha Bell has chipped in 8.9 points per contest. Six Roadrunners are currently averaging more than 5.0 points per game.
LAST TIME OUT
Houston couldn't find a rhythm against TCU's defense Thursday evening, falling to the Horned Frogs by a score of 80-35 at Hofheinz Pavilion.
Houston jumped out to a 6-1 lead over the first three minutes of the contest and held an 8-7 advantage at the 14:39 mark of the opening half before TCU mounted a 19-2 run over a seven-minute period en route to a 35-18 lead at the break.
The Cougars couldn't claw back into the contest to open the final 20 minutes of play as TCU scored the first seven points and held Houston without its first field goal of the second half until the 7:58 mark.
For the seventh-straight game, senior guard Roxana Button scored in double digits with 10 points despite struggling to find an open shot the entire night.
Freshman guard Danielle Parks tallied eight points and drained two more 3-pointers, while sophomore center Mae Woods added six points.
Voché Martin, a freshman center, led the Cougars with a career-best 11 rebounds to go with four points in 24 minutes, while Terran Alford pulled down eight boards.
For the fourth-straight game, the short-handed Cougars played with only seven student-athletes as TCU outscored Houston by a 47-10 margin from the bench.
Houston managed to shoot only 19 percent (9-of-47) from the field while the Horned Frogs shot 49 percent (32-of-66) from the field after a blazing 58-percent clip in the second half.
SERIES HISTORY
Houston and UTSA will meet for the 18th time in the overall series that dates back to the 1981-82 season, as the Cougars have won all 17 matchups. Houston is 8-0 against the Roadrunners in San Antonio, with the last victory at the Convocation Center coming on Dec. 7, 2009 (74-53).
The two teams have faced off the last two years, but only four times since 1990. Houston claimed a 71-59 victory over the Roadrunners last season (Dec. 7, 2010) at Hofheinz Pavilion, led by Courtney Taylor's 24 points and 14 rebounds.
