EL PASO, Texas - Porsche Landry drained back-to-back 3-pointers with under five minutes remaining to halt a furious UTEP rally and propel the University of Houston women's basketball team to a 70-62 victory, Sunday at Don Haskins Center in El Paso, Texas.
The Cougars improved to 13-4 overall and a perfect 4-0 in Conference USA action, joining Tulane as the only unbeaten teams remaining in the league.
Up by two points at the half, the Cougars charged out of the break to score eight-straight points to push the margin to 10. Landry stole a pass and fed Brittany Mason for the layup, and swiped the ball again on the ensuring possession, this time finding an open Lesslee Mason for an old fashioned three-point play. Brittney Scott capped off the flurry with a trey to put the Cougars up 39-29.
Scott, who scored all 15 points in the second half, put Houston up by 15 at the 15:45 mark with another long-range bucket, marking her 10th point in only three minutes.
UTEP (10-6, 2-2) quickly answered with a 12-2 run to cut the deficit to five points in only three minutes of play.
The Cougars would stretch their lead back to nine on Scott's third trey of the half, but the Miners clawed back to make it a two-point game before Landry put Houston ahead for good with 4:27 remaining.
Courtney Taylor led all players with 18 points and 12 rebounds for her 11th double-double of the season and 51st of her career. Taylor snagged her 1,000th-career rebound in the first half to become one of only two Cougars all-time with 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds.
Scott registered 15 second-half points off of 4-of-8 shooting from the field, including a 3-of-7 effort from downtown.
Lesslee Mason posted 12 points and seven boards, while Landry finished with 12 points, four assists and four steals.
The Cougars shot 37 percent (23-of-62) from the field, 38 percent (6-of-16) from beyond the arc and 86 percent (18-of-21) from the charity stripe.
Houston forced 23 UTEP turnovers on 11 steals, while only turning the ball over 14 times.
The Cougars return to action at UAB on Jan. 20 at 7:00 p.m.
