BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The University of Houston women's basketball team overcame an eight-point halftime deficit to top UAB by a score of 74-65, Thursday night at Bartow Arena in Birmingham, Ala. The Cougars improved to a perfect 5-0 in C-USA play, becoming the lone undefeated team in the league.
Houston (14-4, 5-0) put together a 26-4 run in the first 10 minutes of the second half to jump out to its biggest lead of 14 points.
Porsche Landry led the onslaught, posting 19 of her game-high 24 points in the second half. Landry tallied four-consecutive buckets to spark the run, including two from 3-point range, in less than two minutes. The Houston native was 9-of-14 from the field, including a perfect 4-of-4 mark from beyond the arc.
The Blazers (9-9, 1-4) were able to cut the deficit down to only five points with 2:17 remaining before the Cougars relied on free-throws to close out the contest.
Courtney Taylor grabbed her school-record 1,012th-career rebound and converted a layup on the opposite end at the 15:34 mark to cut the UAB halftime lead to only point. Taylor struck once again on the ensuing possession to give Houston the lead for good.
The Crockett, Texas, native was also a dominant force down the stretch, posting 10 of 12 points and 10 of 14 boards in the second half for her 52nd-career double-double.
Fellow senior Brittney Scott drained two 3-pointers in her first two attempts to set the all-time Houston 3-point record, surpassing Cougar great Chandi Jones. Scott tied the record at the 15:35 mark of the first half and followed with her record-breaking trey with 12:11 remaining in the opening half. Scott finished with 11 points, two rebounds and an assist.
Lesslee Mason rounded out the double-figure scorers with 13 points and six boards in 38 minutes.
Brittany Mason added five points, six rebounds and a team-high four assists, while Roxana Button chipped in six points.
Houston led by as many as 10 points with just over 10 minutes remaining in the first half, but went into the break trailing by eight after Amanda Peterson scored nine straight points over the final 1:47.
Peterson led UAB with 18 points, with 15 coming in the opening half. LaShaunda Pratt added 15 points and nine rebounds for the Blazers.
The Cougars shot 43 percent (25-of-58) from the field, 40 percent (6-of-15) from downtown and 56 percent (18-of-32) from the free-throw line.
Houston swatted seven shots and only turned the ball over 11 times, while forcing 18 UAB miscues.
The Cougars return to action to play host to Memphis at noon on Sunday at Hofheinz Pavilion in a nationally-televised contest on CBS College Sports.

*Houston improved to 11-10 all-time versus UAB and 5-5 against the Blazers in Birmingham.
*The Cougars increased their season record to 14-4 and pushed their road record to 7-2.
*Houston tied its best-ever start to Conference USA play at 5-0.
*Senior forward Courtney Taylor pulled down 14 rebounds to break the all-time Houston record, surpassing Vickey Finch (1979-1983).
*Taylor registered her 12th double-double of the season and 52nd of her career.
*Senior guard Brittney Scott set the all-time school record in made 3-pointers, knocking down the 189th trey of her career to pass Chandi Jones (2000-04).
*With 11 points, Scott moved into ninth place in UH history in scoring with 1,291 career points. Scott also made her 79th-consecutive start dating back to the beginning of the 2008-09 season.
