LAREDO, Texas - The University of Houston golf team begins its busiest stretch of the spring season when it opens play at the Border Olympics on Friday morning.
The Cougars will play 108 holes of golf at two tournaments in locations 530 miles apart during the next five days. Houston opens that road swing at Friday morning on the 7,125-yard, par-72 course at Laredo Country Club.
From there, the team heads east on Interstate 10 to take part at the Louisiana Classics at Oakbourne Country Club in Lafayette, La.
Despite the heavy work load, first-year Houston head coach Jonathan Dismuke said he and his team looked forward to the challenge.
"The next few weeks are going to be a marathon, and we realize that we are about to play a lot of golf," Dismuke said. "We must work on getting our rest and staying hydrated because our level of competition is going up and the fields are stronger as we move through the season."
The Cougars enter this weekend's tournament after finishing fourth at the J.L. Lewis Intercollegiate on Feb. 22-23 in New Braunfels, Texas.
At that event, junior Clark Mitzner posted a score of 145 to tie for third on the way to earning Conference USA Golfer of the Week honors, the second time he received the league's weekly award in February.
Senior Jackie Lindsey finished in a tie for seventh after shooting a 146.
Both Mitzner and Lindsey are scheduled to compete in the Cougars' starting lineup, joining junior Matt Eschenburg, freshman Jordan Rumora and sophomore Eric Adler. Senior Beau Davis also will compete as an individual at the tournament.
"Eric has become much better during the course of the year and is a talented player. Beau has as much experience as anyone on the team," Dismuke said. "It is good to have them on the road with us again, and I am anxious to see how they do this week.
This season, Eschenburg and Lindsey are the only two players to have competed in all seven tournaments to date. Eschenburg ranks second on the team with a 75.47 scoring average, while Lindsey joins Mitzner and Rumora as the only players to record season-low rounds of 68 this year.
Davis leads the team with a 75.09 scoring average in four tournaments, while Adler will be competing in only his second tournament this season.
Although the next few days could be wearying for the Cougars, Dismuke looks at the stretch as a springboard for better things during the final week of the regular season.
"If we get on a roll, we can use this to our advantage," Dismuke said. "With the work we have done, we are prepared for this stretch and should do some good things."
