HOUSTON - Senior Justine Farmer recorded a game-high 21 kills but it wasn't enough to defeat Rice Tuesday night as Houston dropped a 3-1 (16-25, 25-21, 23-25, 23-25) decision to the Owls at Fox Gymnasium.
In addition to Farmer's 21 kills, senior Kelsey King had 42 assists and sophomore Amanda Carson had 18 digs.
The Owls got up early on the Cougars in the first set. Rice jumped out to a 6-2 lead before a kill by Farmer pulled the Cougars within three, 6-3. That would be as close as Houston would get, as Rice would go on to take the 25-16 lead in the first set.
Houston responded in the second set, battling the Owls point for point early in the match. UH would be able to grab a small, 10-7 lead before a Rice timeout. Out of the break, Rice scored three straight points of their own, to tie the set, 10-10. The match would continue to be a back and forth battle the rest of the way, but the Cougars built enough of a lead to hold off the Owls and even the match at two sets apiece.
The point-for-point trend continued in the third set before Rice was able to take a two point lead, 10-8. With the score in the Owls favor, 12-9, Houston called a timeout to regroup. UH traded points to Rice before a 4-1 run allowed them to tie the set, 14-14. The two teams would battle back and forth until a Houston timeout with the score knotted at 21-21. Rice held the momentum out of the break and went on to take the 25-23 win.
The fourth set looked as though it was going to continue the back and forth trend but soon Rice was able to build a five point lead, 14-9, forcing the Houston bench to call a timeout. The Cougars came out of the break slow but managed to pull within three, 20-17 and Rice immediately called its first timeout. UH continued to chip away at the deficit and were just two away, 24-22 when the Owls called their second timeout. But Rice came out of the break scoring two quick points to take the win, 25-23.
