HOUSTON - The University of Houston volleyball team defeated UTEP 3-1 (25-14, 22-25, 25-20 and 25-20) at the Athletics Alumni Center Friday night.
The Cougars improve to 14-9 overall and 6-4 in Conference USA with the win. UH is now 7-0 at home this season and have not lost a match on their home court since a 3-2 loss to SMU on Nov. 7, 2007.
Freshman Ingrida Zauere led all Cougars with 18 kills and she tied for a team-high 12 digs to give the Kuldiga, Lativa native the third double-double of her career and her first in conference play.
Houston took the first set behind Zauere, who had six kills on seven attempts for a .857 hitting percentage.
In the second set, Houston led through the early points of play but the Miners battled back to within one point, 20-19 before calling a timeout. Out of the break, UTEP would go on to regain the lead and the win in the set, 25-22, to even the match.
Sophomore Lucy Charuk notched six kills to lead all players in the third set as the Cougars regained the lead in the match with a third set win.
The fourth set looked like it was going to go in the Miners favor until Houston was able to battle back after trailing the set 5-1 in the opening points. UH tied the set 9-9 and would go on to see four tie scores in nine points before eventually taking their first lead, 18-17. From that point on the Cougars would never look back as they won the set, 25-20.
Houston moves to 5-1 this season in four set matches.
