Houston sends off seven Cougars on Senior Day; fall in four sets against #20 TCU
HOUSTON – The Houston Volleyball team closed out its 2025 season, falling in four sets to #20 TCU on Senior Day at Fertitta Center on Saturday afternoon.
Senior Brenya Reid led the Cougars with 20 kills on the day, marking her 10th career outing with 20-or-more. Freshman Gillian Pitts set a new career high with 21 digs, beating her previous best by one for her second performance with 20 or more. Senior Avery Shimaitis notched double-digit kills for seventh time this season and 14th time in her career with 10 on the day while also picking up her first career ace in the second set. Senior Barakat Rahmon posted eight kills on 12 attacks, hitting .583 in her final game as a Cougar while senior Kellen Morin started the game to register one final appearance in her collegiate career.
Both sides opened to a level start as neither team led by more than two points up to 9-9 before Houston rode a quick 3-0 run to lead 12-9. Leading 16-13, the Cougars sparked a 5-0 stretch to break the set open at 21-13 and force a TCU timeout. Each side traded points down the stretch before Houston capped off the frame, winning 25-17.
Despite an early 5-3 Cougar lead to open the second, the Horned Frogs stole the momentum to lead 12-7 nearing the midway point in the set. Back-and-forth rallies saw both sides share points deep into the frame, but TCU closed out the set on a 5-1 run to win 25-16 and level the match.
The third set was dominated by short runs as each side rode multiple 4-0 and 3-0 runs late into the frame, resulting in a 16-15 lead for TCU. Back-to-back kills from Reid and sophomore Alyssa Gonzales cut the deficit to 21-20 late, but it was TCU who returned with a 5-2 run to close out the set at 25-22.
The fourth set mirrored the first as Houston matched TCU up to a 9-9 score. The Horned Frogs opened the frame with a 6-2 stretch to lead 15-11 at the media break. The Cougars battled back to cut the deficit to three, but TCU sealed the match with a 25-18 fourth set win.
