LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Apparently the weather in Houston isn't quite warm enough for University of Houston golf head coach Mike Dirks and his squad, which will be staying out west through the weekend.
The Cougars, who escaped the freezing weather that moved through the South last week for a nine-day road trip in the West, will compete with some of the nation's best teams at the Las Vegas Collegiate on Friday through Sunday.
The three-day, 54-hole competition begins at 8 a.m. Friday with a shotgun start. UH joins a field, which includes host UNLV, Alabama, Air Force, Air Force, Arizona, Arizona State, Clemson, Florida, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Kent State, New Mexico, North Carolina State, Ohio State, Oklahoma State and TCU on the 7,381-yard, par-72 course at Southern Highlands Golf Club.
UH finished 12th at the Cleveland Golf Classic in Westlake Village, Calif., on Tuesday.
In the Cougars' last tournament, junior Brett Callas fired an even-par 71 during the final round to tie for 20th place with a 54-hole score of 221. Junior Simon Robinson was the only Cougar to improve his score with each round and tied for 30th with a score of 223, while sophomore Brad McIntosh, the defending 2001 Conference USA Tournament individual champion, tied for 33rd at 225.
Robinson remains the team's most consistent performer this season with a 72.6 scoring average, nearly two full strokes better than his closest competitor on the team.
This will be the Cougars' last tournament for about two-and-a-half weeks, as the team won't return to action until March 25-26 at the Morris Williams Intercollegiate in Austin, Texas.
