Lady Cougars Roll Over Sam Houston State 106-54

HOUSTON - Sara Hinkley came off the bench to score a career-high 19 points and lead the University of Houston women's basketball team to a 106-54 victory over Sam Houston State Sunday at Hofheinz Pavilion to wrap up the 2002 Houston Classic. The Lady Cougars' 106 points were the most scored by the team since a 112-73 win over TCU on Feb. 6, 1994.
Hinkley's 19 points, four rebounds and three steals marked her career-high game while Nicole Oliver posted a career-best 16 points and five steals. All-American and 2002 Confernce USA Player of the Year Chandi Jones added 17 points and seven rebounds and Angela Curl added 11 points for the Lady Cougars. Shondra Bush posted 13 points before leaving the game with an ankle sprain early in the second half.
SHSU (1-4, 0-0 SLC) was led by Alice Johnson, who was 7-14 from the floor for 20 points and nine rebounds. Kelley Kramer was the other Bearkat to score in double figures, adding 12 points and eight boards.
Houston opened the contest with 6-0 run before Johnson put the Bearkats on the board at 17:12. The Lady Cougars went on a 10-0 run until SHSU scored again at the 16-4 mark. SHSU could not keep up with the Houston defense, giving up the ball 13 times and going 0-9 from behind the arc. Houston led 49-23 at the half.
The second half opened with Jones shooting two on a SHSU coach technical foul and two more on a player foul to bring the lead to 53-23. Houston was 17-32 from the floor and 20-27 at the charity stripe in the second for 52-point victory, its largest lead of the game.
Houston (3-2, 0-0 C-USA) outshot SHSU 50.7 to 36.5 percent and racked up 23 steals, scoring 34 points off the Bearkat's 28 turnovers. The Lady Cougar reserves accounted for 47 points on the afternoon as Houston finished 2-0 in the 2002 Houston Classic.
The Lady Cougars will travel to El Paso to battle UTEP Wednesday at 7 p.m. and on to Raleigh, N.C. for the North Carolina State Tournament. Houston will face Florida Friday at 7:30 p.m. and either Washington or host NC State Saturday at 4 or 6 p.m. in the consolation or championship game, respectively.
