Edsel Hamilton joined the Houston Cougar Women’s Basketball program as its Director of Basketball Operations prior to the 2017-18 season.
With the Cougars, Hamilton oversees operations of the program including weekly and daily scheduling, assisting with game scheduling, coordinating all team travel arrangements, overseeing the team budget, organizing summer camps, managing other operations personnel and support staff, serving as a liaison with athletic administration, business office, compliance, marketing and nutrition and assisting with on-campus recruiting.
Hamilton joined Head Coach Ronald Hughey’s staff after two seasons as the Head Coach at East Texas Baptist University in Marshall, Texas. Hamilton saw tremendous success in just two seasons with the Tigers, leading to the program to a best of 17 wins, while guiding them to their first tournament win in eight years. The team was also honored with the ASC East SAAC Team Sportsmanship Award in 2016-17, while Lauren Lee was named the ASC East Sportsmanship Athlete of the Year.
Hamilton recruited a bevy of talent to ETBU including including Hanna Holt who was named ASC East Freshman of the Year in 2016-17, while making the ASC East Second Team that season and being named as a finalist for the Hero Sports D3 National Newcomer of the Year award. Hamilton also coached April Leonard to the ASC East First Team in 2015-16, while Taylee Alexander landed on the ASC East Second Team and ASC East All-Defense teams in the same campaign.
Hamilton’s Tigers also garnered great success in the classroom, culminating in a 3.0 grade point average for ETBU after his second season at the helm. Hamilton saw seven student-athletes, Lauren Lee, Kaitlyn Packett and Jhaenniece Rasberry in 2016-17 as well as Alexander, Samantha Busby, Morgan Garrett and Ambrosia Woodard in 2015-16, qualify for the ASC All-Academic Team, while Garret claimed 2015-16’s ASC Scholar-Athlete Medal of Honor.
Prior to joining the Tigers, Hamilton spent eight seasons as a member of Head Coach Kim Mulkey’s staff at Baylor. Hamilton began his career at Baylor as Graduate Assistant/Video Coordinator in 2007. After completing his master’s degree in Sport Management in 2009, he went on to hold roles of Coordinator of Video Operations (2009-11), Coordinator of Basketball Operations (2011-12) and Director of Basketball Operations (2012-15) in his tenure with the Lady Bears.
As a member of Baylor’s staff, Hamilton helped lead the Lady Bears to five Big XII Regular Season Championships and six Big XII tournament championships. One of the top programs in the nation, Hamilton and the Lady Bears collected NCAA Tournament wins in each of his eight seasons while advancing to seven Sweet Sixteen’s, five Elite Eights, two NCAA Final Fours and winning the 2012 NCAA Championship after becoming the first team in history to finish the season 40-0.
With the Lady Bears, Hamilton authored all written and video scouting reports and player profiles during his final four seasons, while assisting the head coach and associate head coach with game-planning for each opponent. Hamilton also assisted with on-campus recruiting while managing the team’s all-male practice squad and assisting with charted statistics during games.
Hamilton, a 2007 graduate of the University of Southern California with a bachelor’s degree in Economics, got his start with the Trojans as a Student Assistant/Manager and Scout Team Player from 2004-07. In his time with the Trojans, USC advanced to the PAC-10 semifinals and the NCAA Tournament in 2004-05 and 2005-06.
