Cougars Maul Owls

HOUSTON – Houston Baseball exploded for 18 runs, hit three homers, and scored the second-most runs against Rice in series history in Houston's 18-1 run-rule victory on Wednesday night at Reckling Park.

The 18 runs scored by Houston (8-4) is the most runs scored by either team in the Silver Glove Series since the Cougars scored 24 runs in the 2016 nine-inning game on May 17, 2016, at Constellation Field.

Sophomore Xavier Perez drove in the second most RBI in school history with an eight RBI performance. Perez went 4-for-8 with two doubles and a home run. Perez drove runs in on every hit including a three-RBI double in the third inning and a three-run homer in the seventh.

Freshman right-handed pitcher Kendall Hoffman (1-0) earned his first winning pitching 4.0 scoreless innings in the seven-inning game. Hoffman struck out a career-high seven Owls while surrendering just one hit and one walk.

Four different Cougars had multi-hit games, and three different Cougars hit home runs.

Sophomore Tre Broussard hit an inside the park home run in the second inning and junior Cade Climie clubbed a towering shot to left field three batters after Perez's home run.

Nine different Cougars tallied hits while eight drove in runs. The 17-run margin of victory is the second largest by Houston in Silver Glove Series.

Houston returns home for a three-game series against Grambling, Friday-Sunday, at Don Sanders Field at Darryl and Lori Schroeder Park. All three games will stream on ESPN+ with Friday's opner slated for a 6:30 p.m. start.
