Late Offense Propels Houston Past Lamar

HOUSTON – Powered by eight runs across the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, the University of Houston Softball team downed Lamar, 10-6, at Cougar Softball Stadium on Tuesday night.

Freshman Rylee Michalak (4-1) closed the game and picked up the victory in the circle for Houston (17-8), spinning 2.1 innings and allowing just two hits. Sabrina Jolin (1-3) took the loss, allowing two runs in two-thirds of an inning for Lamar (15-13).

Game Highlights

With sophomore Makenna Mitchell's and junior Mandy Esman's home runs in the sixth inning, Houston hit back-to-back homers for the fourth time this season. The Cougars previously completed the feat twice against Iowa State as part of three consecutive homers and against Tarleton.
Houston went 5-for-11 (.455) while adding six RBIs with two outs and 6-for-11 (.545) with runners in scoring position in the win.
The Cougars drew seven walks in the game led by freshman Isabel Cintron's two.
Houston tallied double-digit hits for the seventh time this season while scoring double-digit runs for the fifth time.
The Cougars won by a score of 10-6 for the first time in program history, the team's third scorigami of the season.
Every member of Houston's starting lineup recorded a hit for the third time this season.
Houston won its sixth game of the season in its black uniforms.
The Cougars hit multiple homers for the fifth time this season.

Key Innings
1^st | Houston struck first with a pair of runs in the first inning. Cintron led off the inning by being hit by a pitch and scored as freshman Brooke Wells doubled to left field. Wells later came around to score on a fielder's choice off the bat of Esman.

4^th | After Lamar cut into the lead with a run in the third, the Cardinals evened the score with an unearned run in the fourth.

Houston immediately answered to reclaim the lead with another pair of runs in the home half of the frame. With freshman Ariel Redmond and Cintron on base, freshman Maddie Hartley laced a two-RBI single into left field to put Houston back in front, 4-2.

5^th | The Cardinals took their first lead of the game in the fifth. Two doubles allowed three runs to cross, putting Lamar up 5-4.

The Cougars responded with three runs of their own in the bottom of the frame. A walk and double put runners on the corners and sophomore Bethany Aguilar drew a walk as a pinch hitter to load the bases. Back-to-back walks from Prudhomme and Cintron plated two while an infield single off the bat of Hartley scored a third to put Houston ahead 7-5.

6^th | While an RBI double shrunk Houston's lead to 7-6 in the top of the sixth, Houston added a trio of insurance runs later in the inning. A leadoff homer from Esman was immediately followed up with Mitchell's sixth homer of the season to push the Cougars' lead to three. Redmond doubled later in the inning and scored as Prudhomme singled to right field to cap the scoring at 10-6.
