Sophomore Chi Chun Chen matches career low round, paces Cougars in sixth place
LAREDO, Texas – University of Houston Men's Golf earned its third runner-up finish of the season, carding an even-par, 861, as part of its first team-scoring tournament of the spring from the 54-hole Border Olympics at Laredo Country Club on Tuesday.
Houston shot 2-over, 286, on Tuesday, trimming five stroke off its Second Round to tie New Mexico State at the two-day event. The Cougars, who have earned six straight Top-5 finishes at the Border Olympics including Top-2 results three of the last four years, were led by sophomore Chi Chun Chen's sixth place result at even-par, 213.
The Tainan, Taiwan, native climbed 13 spots up the leaderboard on the final day thanks to a 4-under, 67. The score matched New Mexico State's Ethan Klose for the lowest round at the two-day event and was the lowest 18-hole score for the Cougars through three individual or team events this spring.
Chen tapped in four birdies and added an eagle – one of 14 by the field at the Border Olympics – Tuesday while matching his career low round. His 7-under on nine Par-5 opportunities matched Lipscomb's Sam Potter for the lowest score among the 84-player field.
Louisiana, which entered Tuesday's Final Round with a three-stroke lead, captured the tournament title at 3-over, 855, after matching the lowest round of the day at 1-under. New Mexico State's Klose earned the individual title at 5-under, 208, holding off Michigan's Hunter Thomson (209) by one stroke.
