Football Rolls to Big Road Win at Oklahoma State

Cougars score 26 unanswered points behind quarterback Conner Weigman 306 passing yards and three total TDs
STILLWATER, Okla. – University of Houston junior quarterback Conner Weigman threw for 306 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for another score to lead the Cougars to a 39-17 win over Oklahoma State inside Boone Pickens Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
In one of their most complete performances of the season to date, the Cougars rolled to 485 yards of total offense, including 319 passing yards, and limited the Cowboys to only 225 yards of offense, including 45 rushing yards on 31 carries.
Tied 10-10 with less than six minutes remaining in the first half, Houston scored 26 unanswered points to record its first win in Stillwater since the Cougars took a 45-35 win over the #5/6 Cowboys on Sept. 12, 2009.
Senior running back Dean Connors rushed for 83 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries and added two catches for seven yards, including an amazing, one-handed 6-yard touchdown reception to give the Cougars the lead for good midway through the second quarter.
With that Connors became the 33rd Cougar in school history to record rushing and receiving touchdowns in the same game. He became the first Cougar to accomplish that feat since quarterback Donovan Smith threw, rushed and caught touchdowns against #24/25 Oklahoma State on Nov. 18, 2023.
Junior wide receiver Amare Thomas led all players with seven receptions for 157 yards while senior tight end Tanner Koziol hauled in five catches for 66 yards.
Defensively, senior linebacker Jalen Garner led the Cougars with seven tackles, including four solo with two for solo stops, and forced a pair of fumbles with a pass breakup. Defensive lineman Carlos Allen added six tackles with three solo stops and broke up a pass.
On the special teams side, senior kicker Ethan Sanchez booted four field goals with a long of 48 yards on Saturday.
With the win, Houston improved to 5-1 overall and 2-1 in Big 12 play. Oklahoma State fell to 1-5 and 0-3 in the Big 12.
The Cougars also enjoyed their biggest road win at Oklahoma State and scored the second-most points against the Cowboys in the series history. It trailed only the 45 points in the 2009 meeting.
After Oklahoma State scored on its opening possession, the Cougars responded with a touchdown of their own on their initial drive of the game. Weigman finished 3-for-3 with 56 passing yards and knotted the game at 7-7 with a 3-yard touchdown plunge with 7:43 remaining in the first quarter.
The Cougars converted a pair of third-down conversions, including a 29-yard pass to junior wide receiver Harvey Broussard to move into the red zone.
After turnover over Oklahoma State on downs on the next possession, the Cougars took over and grabbed a 10-3 lead when senior kicker Ethan Sanchez booted a 46-yard field goal with 45 seconds left in the opening period.
The Cowboys took advantage of a botched Houston punt and tied the game on Logan Ward's 37-yard field goal with 11:08 left in the first half.
Houston regained the lead after forcing the Cowboys to punt. Senior running back Dean Connors highlighted the drive, rushing twice for 22 yards and snagging an amazing, one-handed, 6-yard touchdown pass from Weigman with 5:39 remaining in the first half.
The Cougars pushed their advantage to 24-10 when Weigman connected on another one-handed touchdown reception – this one to Broussard from 14 yards out – with 3:16 left in the first half.
Houston opened the second half with field goals from Sanchez on its first two possessions of 48 and 30 yards and grabbed a 36-10 lead on Connors' 2-yard touchdown run with only 35 seconds left in the third quarter.
The Cougars moved to 39-10 when Sanchez booted his fourth field goal of the game from 29 yards out with 7:43 left.
Oklahoma State closed the gap to 39-17 on Noah Walters' 33-yard touchdown pass to Gavin Freeman, but that would be as close as Oklahoma State would get the rest of the way.
