Bears defeat Cougars 70-51 on Friday night
WACO, Texas – With three Cougars in double figures, the University of Houston Women's Basketball program was unable to stop rv/#24 Baylor in a 70-51 decision inside Foster Pavilion on Friday evening.
Houston (5-13, 1-6 Big 12) was led in scoring by redshirt sophomore guard Gigi Cooke's 17 points, followed by graduate guard Eylia Love's 12 points and seven rebounds. Graduate guard Laila Blair posted 11 points for her 13th game this season with 10 or more points. Blair needs one 3-pointer to tie Brittney Scott's school record of 226 3-pointers made.
Baylor (16-3, 6-1) had three players in double figures with senior center Aaronette Vonleh's near double-double of 18 points and nine rebounds.
The Cougars opened the first minutes of the game strong with a 6-0 run to grab an early 8-5 lead. Redshirt senior guard Leilani Augmon exited the game at the 7:19 mark with a nose injury leaving the Cougars with eight available players. Baylor capitalized and ended the quarter on an 8-0 run to take a 16-9 lead.
Baylor continued its run to start the second quarter, but Cooke ended the Houston scoring drought with a layup. Both teams continued to chip away, but the Bears were able to take a 34-23 advantage at the half.
Houston came out firing at the start of the third with a 7-0 run to trim the deficit down to six, but Baylor quickly responded with an 8-0 scoring streak of its own. Following the media timeout, the Cougars attempted to get back in the game off a 3-pointer from graduate guard Ashley Chevalier and a jumper by Love, but Baylor continued to strike back as it took a 51-38 lead at the end of the frame.
The Bears continued to take advantage of scoring runs to take the victory over the Cougars. Cooke scored 10 of her 17 points including all of Houston's field goals in the final quarter.
