Blair knocks down her 227th trey, becoming the Cougars’ all-time 3-point scorer
HOUSTON – Despite graduate guard Laila Blair breaking the program's all-time 3-pointers record, the University of Houston Women's Basketball team fell to Texas Tech, 62-44, on Wednesday afternoon inside Fertitta Center.
With 24.3 seconds left in the game, Blair knocked down the 227th 3-pointer of her career, passing Brittney Scott (2007-11) to break the program's 3-point record. Blair led Houston with 15 points, draining a pair of outside shots to cement her name at the top of the record book.
The Cougars (5-14, 1-7 Big 12) started slow offensively with just one made field goal from graduate guard Eylia Love in the first nine minutes of play. Love's six first-quarter points, including 4-4 from the charity stripe, kept Houston within reach. The Kansas City, Kan., native's field goal was the only bucket made by the Cougars until Blair and sophomore guard Kierra Merchant knocked down back-to-back triples with less than a minute left to drive the home team to a 13-10 lead after the first quarter.
The second frame was all Texas Tech (14-7, 3-5 Big 12) with the Lady Raiders outscoring the Cougars, 18-4, as Houston shot 18.2% from the field in the second. An 11-0 run helped Texas Tech go into halftime up 28-17.
Redshirt sophomore guard Gigi Cooke opened the scoring after the break with a floater in the lane, but a 23-4 outburst from the Lady Raiders pushed the lead to 26. The Cougars ended the quarter on a 6-2 run but trailed 51-29 heading into the final frame.
Blair's eight points in the fourth quarter led the way as Houston outscored Texas Tech, 15-11, in the period. The Lady Raider's bench tallied 30 points compared to one from Houston's limited bench as redshirt senior guard Leilani Augmon was sidelined due to a broken nose.
