Cougars return to winning ways, downs Northwestern State in three sets
HOUSTON – The rv University of Houston Volleyball team used a team-leading 15 kills from freshman outside hitter Lily Barron to clinch its first sweep of the 2024 season, defeating Northwestern State in three sets on Saturday evening inside Fertitta Center.
Barron's 15 kills, her first collegiate double-digit total, represented over a third of Houston's (3-1) offensive output while a stellar defensive effort led by graduate libero Kate Georgiades' 10 digs and redshirt junior middle blocker Barakat Rahmon's five blocks limited the Lady Demons (4-2) to a .105 hitting percentage in the match, including two of three sets with a sub-.100 efficiency.
Houston picked up its 47th straight-set win under Head Coach David Rehr, averaging over nine per season since Rehr took the helm in 2019, including 13 in 2021, 15 in 2022 and 11 in 2023.
Graduate outside hitter Angela Grieve continued to play a major role in the Cougars' attack with 13 kills in the match, posting her 77th career double-digit kill performance which includes all matches this season.
A pair of 3-0 runs gave Houston a 9-3 lead in the first. However Northwestern State fought back with a 4-0 stretch to close the gap at 17-15. The teams traded points for the remainder of the frame, giving Houston a 25-21 set victory.
Houston again took the early edge in the second as an ace from redshirt senior Rebecca Rocassin put the Cougars up 6-3. The Lady Demons took their only lead of the match at 9-8 following a 4-0 run, but Houston quickly answered with three straight points to reclaim the advantage. A 5-0 run powered by three kills from Barron later in the set pushed the Cougars' edge to 20-13. Houston closed the set on another 5-1 stretch to win the second, 25-16.
Like the first two frames, Houston pounced quickly to claim a three-point lead after nine points. An ace and a kill from Barron fueled a 8-1 period for Houston, pushing its advantage to 16-7, as the Cougars continued to control play for the remainder, winning the set, 25-14, and the match, 3-0.
