Cougars win the first and nearly force a fifth set in third Top 10 test of the season
LAWRENCE, Kansas – Behind double-doubles from redshirt freshman Ashlyn Bellamy and graduate Angela Grieve, the University of Houston Volleyball team nearly forced a fifth set by forcing extra points in the fourth, but ultimately fell to #9 Kansas, 3-1, on Friday night at Horejsi Family Volleyball Arena.
Bellamy, earning her first collegiate start, posted 11 kills and 11 digs for her first career double-double. With 12 digs and 10 kills, Grieve tallied her second consecutive double-double. Junior Avery Shimaitis led Houston offensively with 12 kills, her fourth career double-digit kill tally, while redshirt junior Barakat Rahmon played well on both sides of the ball, posting a 9-1-17 (.471) line with a team-leading four blocks.
Graduate libero Kate Georgiades continued her defensive dominance, recording 22 digs for her 48th career 20-plus dig performance while also extending her streak of double-digit dig demonstrations to 16 consecutive matches.
Houston came out fast in the first set. Despite 14 ties and four lead changes, the Cougars settled in well in a hostile environment, hitting .343 in the opening frame. While Houston held small advantages throughout the set, the teams remained close throughout, ultimately ending up tied at 18-18. Back-to-back points for the Jayhawks put Houston behind late, but a 6-1 stretch put the Cougars back in front, allowing Houston to earn the win, 25-22.
Kansas responded in the second set. Winning four of the first five points, the Jayhawks quickly took control and used a late 8-1 stretch to cruise to a 25-14 set win.
After splitting the first 16 points in the third, a 4-0 run put Kansas ahead for good, giving the Jayhawks enough room to win the third, 25-17.
Houston repeatedly held small leads early in the fourth, leading 3-1 and 7-5, but Kansas fought back to claim a 10-8 edge. The Cougars responded with a 4-2 run to even the frame, eventually taking the lead at the media timeout, 15-14. After the break, Houston capitalized, extending its lead to 21-17, but Kansas clawed its way back into the set, tying the frame at 23-all. While the Jayhawks won the next point to set up match point, a kill from Bellamy evened the set again, but back-to-back point for Kansas sealed a 26-24 set win for the Jayhawks.
