The Cougars host six games including five contests against opponents who competed in the postseason a season ago. Kansas State, who comes to TDECU Stadium on Nov. 2, checks in at #21 among ESPN's Way-Too-Early Top 25. Houston opens play against UNLV (Aug. 31) in a matchup against a Rebels program which won nine games for the first time in nearly four decades in 2023.
Houston hosts Rice (Sept. 14) in the 46th meeting between the cross-town rivals and faces Iowa State (Sept. 28) for the first time in the history of the programs. The Cougars take on first-year league member Utah (Oct. 26) in the Utes first matchup at Houston since 1978 at the Astrodome. Houston caps home play against in-state rival Baylor (Nov. 23) as part of the Bears first matchup on the campus of the University of Houston (previous: Astrodome – 10x; Rice Stadium – 3x).
Fans can get their first look at the 2024 Cougars at the program's Red-White Spring Game at 10 a.m., Saturday, April 13, inside the Carl Lewis International Complex. The event is free to attend and will also be broadcast on Big 12 Now on ESPN+.
NEW ERA BEGINS
First-year Houston Football Head Coach Willie Fritz leads the Cougars into the program's second season in the Big 12. This spring, the squad welcomed 24 mid-year enrollees (14 defensive players, nine on offense and one specialist) and returned 27 letterwinners (14 on offense, 11 on defense, two on special teams). Houston began spring practice on Tuesday and will practice 15 times over a 34-day period with one week off for the University's spring break (March 11-16).
Among the newcomers, 19 possess prior Division I experience, three enrolled early from high school and another pair come to Houston following successful junior college starts.
