Four Cougars score in double figures in 74-60 loss to Texas Tech on Thursday
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Despite four Cougars scoring in double figures, the University of Houston Women's Basketball program's inaugural season as a member of the Big 12 Conference came to an end with a 74-60 loss to (12) Texas Tech in the First Round of the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship inside T-Mobile Arena on Thursday evening.
Senior forward Peyton McFarland led Houston with 14 points and six rebounds, senior guard Laila Blair scored 11 points, and junior forward Maliyah Johnson added 10. Graduate guard Britney Onyeje went a perfect 4-for-4 from beyond the arc in her final game for the Cougars.
It was a slow start for both teams offensively, but the Cougars (14-16, 5-13 Big 12) held an early 8-4 advantage thanks to jumpers from McFarland, senior forward Kamryn Jones and Blair.
Texas Tech (17-15, 5-13 Big 12) used a 7-0 run to take an 11-8 edge before Onyeje knocked down her first of four 3-pointers at the buzzer to tie the game at 11.
The Lady Raiders opened the second quarter on an 8-0 run before the Cougars responded with a 7-0 run to draw within one. Texas Tech used a 10-5 run to lead 30-24 at the break.
The two teams traded buckets to start the third quarter before Texas Tech went on a 9-0 run to stretch the lead to 20. Jasmine Shavers scored nine of her 29 points in the third period. Houston chipped away at the end of the frame with a 6-0 run to get within 14 to close the quarter.
The Cougars opened the final frame with an 8-2 run to cut their deficit to eight off a pair of layups by McFarland, sandwiched by a 3-pointer from Onyeje. Five points from Shavers in the game's final two minutes sealed the victory for the Lady Raiders.
