HOUSTON – The University of Houston Women's Basketball team played a tremendous defensive game, but it wasn't enough as it fell to #13/13 Baylor, 83-60 inside Fertitta Center on Sunday afternoon.
Houston (12-10, 3-8 Big 12) forced 26 Baylor (17-4, 6-4 Big 12) turnovers, a new season high for the Bears.
Senior guard Laila Blair led the Cougars with 14 points, while Baylor's Dre'una Edwards led the Bears with 15 points and eight rebounds.
Houston shrunk an eight-point Baylor lead in the first quarter to four with multiple defensive stops. Graduate guard Britney Onyeje sparked an 8-4 run for the Cougars and recorded her 200th career 3-pointer.
In the second quarter, freshman guard Kierra Merchant made a jumper to close the deficit and left Houston down by one. The Cougars earned their second lead off a pair of free throws, bumping the score, 25-23.
Baylor fought back with a field goal outside the paint, along with two free throws, to take the lead into halftime, 37-29.
Houston started slow in the second half, but Blair and graduate forward Bria Patterson got the ball rolling with back-to-back threes. An additional two points from Blair inside the paint and a 6-0 Baylor run ended the third quarter with the Cougars down, 58-43.
After both teams exchanged points in the fourth quarter, Baylor went on a late 10-3 run to seal the win for the Bears.
