Kansas Holds Off Houston in Lawrence

Cougars return to Fertitta Center to host #7/8 Texas on Wednesday
LAWRENCE, Kan. – Despite outrebounding Kansas, the University of Houston Women's Basketball program fell against Kansas, 69-52, on Thursday evening inside Allen Fieldhouse.
Senior guard Laila Blair chipped in 18 points, while junior forward Maliyah Johnson recorded 11 points and seven rebounds. Senior forward Peyton McFarland recorded nine points and nine rebounds, just shy of a double-double.
Houston (12-11, 3-9 Big 12) and Kansas (13-10, 6-6- Big 12) traded points early, but a 6-0 run by the Jayhawks gave them a five-point lead at the end of the first quarter.
The Jayhawks scored the first six points of the second period, but the Cougars responded with a 7-0 run. McFarland had six of her nine points in the second quarter.
Johnson scored nine of her 11 points in the first half to keep the Cougars within five heading into the locker room.
The back-and-forth battle continued in the second half, but Kansas closed the third quarter on a 7-0 run to take a 13-point lead into the final frame. Taiyanna Jackson scored 10 points in the quarter as part of her 25-point and 15-rebound performance. She added nine blocks to give her the Kansas school record for career blocks.
After Blair made a 3-pointer to open the fourth quarter, Kansas used a pair of 6-0 runs to take hold of the game and secure the win. Freshman Kierra Merchant scored six of her 10 points in the final frame to put three Cougars in the double figures.

Houston returns to Fertitta Center as it hosts #12/14 Texas at 7 p.m., Wednesday and travels to Stillwater, Okla., to face Oklahoma State on Saturday, Feb. 17, at 4 p.m.
