
Softball Splits Results on Day One of Tiger Classic

Cougars earn sixth run-rule win before stumbling against a top-10 foe
BATON ROUGE, La. – The University of Houston Softball team split its results on the first day of the Tiger Classic at Tiger Field on Friday.
Houston opened the day with a 10-1, five-inning win over Austin Peay. The Cougars kept it close through four in the second game of the day against #6/#7 LSU, but a late rally from the Tigers broke open the game, giving LSU a 10-3 win.
GAME ONE – HOUSTON 10, AUSTIN PEAY 1
Graduate Shelby Smith (6-0) kept her unblemished record on the year with her sixth win for the Cougars (11-1). She threw three scoreless innings, allowing only one hit and no walks while striking out two. Samantha Meiner (1-2) earned the loss for Austin Peay (5-3).
Player Highlights
2nd | Smith started the scoring with a two-run homer, her first of the season, that also drove home redshirt junior Clare Ceynowa. A single and a pair of walks allowed the Cougars to load the bases after and Cantu laced a single through the right side to plate a pair, making the score 4-0. Houston capitalized on a throwing error later in the inning to allow another two to score and plated their seventh run of the frame on an inning-ending fielders choice as the runner crossed before the out.
Austin Peay added a run in the bottom of the inning as Morgan Zuege singled with the bases loaded to get the Governors on the board, but sophomore Tamya Waiters escaped the jam after, allowing just one run.
3rd | Cantu continued to be a productive part of the lineup in the third, hitting a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded to drive home her third run of the game to make the score 8-1.
5th | With a win in sight, Houston rallied for two runs in the top of the fifth to seal the run-rule win. With a runner on first and second, Cantu singled home junior Lair Beautae to extend the Cougars' lead to eight. Coleman added another insurance run later in the frame with a groundout that forced home Thomas to give Houston a 10-1 win.
GAME TWO – #6/#7 LSU 10, HOUSTON 3
Smith (6-1) picked up her first loss of the season by earning the decision for Houston (11-2). Raelin Chaffin (3-0) recorded the decision for LSU (11-0) with four innings of work in the circle.

1st | LSU took the lead early, plating a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. Danieca Coffey led off the inning with a homer and the Tigers added another on a single with two runners on.
4th | With two runners on, Rollin doubled to left center, plating both freshman Mikalah Nitta and junior Turiya Coleman to cut Houston's deficit to 4-3.
5th | The Tigers opened up their lead in the home half of the fifth. Three straight singles drove home the first run of the inning and an additional three hits scored another four runs to push LSU's advantage to 9-3. The Tigers added another in the sixth to finalize the score at 10-3.
UP NEXT
Houston continues play at the Tiger Classic with another pair of games on Saturday. The Cougars play Boise State at 11 a.m. to open the day, then face off in a rematch against LSU at 4 p.m.
