Softball Drops Pair on Tiger Classic Day Two

Houston fell to rv/rv Boise State before a loss in the afternoon game to #6/#7 LSU
BATON ROUGE, La. – The University of Houston Softball team fell in both of its games on day two of the Tiger Classic at Tiger Stadium on Saturday.
The Cougars (11-4) opened the day with five-inning, 9-1 loss to rv/rv Boise State before coming up short in a 5-0 loss to #6/#7 LSU in the second game of the day.
GAME ONE – rv/rv BOISE STATE 9, HOUSTON 1
Sophomore Tamya Waiters (1-1) picked up the loss for Houston (11-3) in the circle after allowing three runs (two earned). Abby Dowell (2-1) clinched the win for Boise State (10-5) after throwing four innings with one run.

Key Innings
2nd | Boise State broke the game open in the top of the second. The Broncos plated their first run on an error with the bases loaded and added four more on a pair of singles and walks. Boise State capped the frame with a two-run double to take a 6-0 advantage.
4th | Houston responded with a run in the bottom of the fourth. With a pair of runners in scoring positon, Smith singled up the middle to allow Kennedy Thomas to score.
5th | Boise State earned the run-rule win in the fifth as a double off the bat of Alycia Flores scored a run and another Bronco scoring two batters later, being driven home on a single up the middle to earn an eight-run lead, winning the game, 9-1.
GAME TWO – #6/#7 LSU 5, HOUSTON 0
Waiters (1-2) picked up the decision for Houston (11-4) after allowing just one run on two hits in 2.2 innings in the circle.

KEY INNINGS
2nd | Back-to-back doubles from Raeleen Gutierrez and Ali Newland earned LSU the early lead, 1-0. While two runners would still be on base later in the inning, Smith entered the circle in relief and shut the door, ending the threat.
5th | The Tigers added another pair of runs in the fifth. Back-to-back bunt singles followed by a sacrifice bunt put a pair of runners in scoring position. A close play at the plate on a grounder to first base gave LSU its first run of the inning with another scoring in the next at-bat on a fielder's choice, making the score 3-0.
Back-to-back doubles with two outs pushed another two runs across to give the Tigers a five run lead.
UP NEXT
Houston closes out play at the Tiger Classic with rematch of the Cougars' tournament opener against Austin Peay at 11 a.m., Sunday.
