
Women’s Basketball Drops Conference Opener in Lubbock

Cougars fall 74-59 against Lady Raiders on Sunday
LUBBOCK, Texas – University of Houston Women's Basketball program dropped its Big 12 Conference opener, 74-59, against Texas Tech inside United Supermarkets Arena on Sunday.
Houston (4-8, 0-1 Big 12) had four players score in double figures including 12 points from redshirt sophomore guard Gigi Cooke, followed by graduate guard Laila Blair's 11 points and 10 points from both graduate guard Eylia Love and fifth-year forward Peyton McFarland.
Texas Tech (12-2, 1-0 Big 12) was led in scoring by junior guard Bailey Maupin's career-high 28 points while junior forward Sarenge Sanogo recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Both teams opened the first minutes of the game with quick responses. Texas Tech drained four 3-pointers to take a 14-7 lead at the media timeout. Following the timeout, the Cougars forced seven Lady Raider turnovers and went on a 10-0 run to take a 17-14 lead at the end of the frame.
The second quarter was all Texas Tech as it outscored Houston by 12 points and used a 7-0 run to regain the lead. The Cougars cut the deficit by three, but Texas Tech responded with an 8-2 run to head into the locker room, 40-31. Blair was issued the first technical of her career with 1:07 in the second.
In the third quarter, Houston took several trips to the free-throw line, scoring nine of its 15 points in the frame from the charity stripe.
Texas Tech expanded its lead in the fourth by as many as 17 from a 3-pointer by Maupin. With 2:53 remaining in the game, Blair picked up her second technical and was ejected from the game.
