Men’s Golf Opens 2023-24 Season at Argent Financial Classic

Three-day, 54-hole tournaments runs through Tuesday at Squire Creek Country Club
CHOUDRANT, La. – The University of Houston Men's Golf program opens its 2023 fall season when it competes at the Argent Financial Classic beginning Sunday morning.
In 2022-23, the Cougars enjoyed four Top-Four team finishes, including the American Athletic Conference Championships crown. With that last title, the Cougars competed in the NCAA postseason for the 23rd time in school history and the ninth time under Director of Golf Jonathan Dismuke.
A year ago, the Cougars opened the Jim Rivers Intercollegiate (as the tournament was then called) with a 12-under 276 as a team and finished fifth with a three-day score of 10-under 854. Current super senior Austyn Reily posted a 7-under 209, thanks to 68s in the First and Final Rounds, to lead the Cougars and finished 11th.
Schools will play 18 holes each day through Tuesday on the 7,105-yard, par-72 course.

ABOUT the COUGARS
Under the leadership of Director of Golf Jonathan Dismuke, the Cougars will be represented by senior All-American Santiago De La Fuente, sophomore Hudson Weibel, junior Wolfgang Glawe, junior Laurenz Schiergen and sophomore Ruben Lindsay. Junior Jacob Borow will compete as an individual.
In 2022-23, De La Fuente assembled one of the finest seasons in Houston Men's Golf history. The Guadalajara, Mexico, native finished with a 70.71 scoring average for the second-best single-season mark in school history and led the Cougars with 26 rounds of par or better including 13 in the 60s.
De La Fuente was named the American Athletic Conference Player of the Year and captured the Conference Championships individual title after firing three straight rounds in the 60s on the way to a 10-under 200.
Weibel and Schiergen will make their Houston debuts this weekend. Both joined the Cougars as transfers during the summer with Weibel coming from Oklahoma and Schiergen from Kansas State.
The Argent Financial Classic also marks the debut of new Assistant Coach Cameron Peck, who joined the Cougars after a professional playing career and a stint as assistant coach at UCF during the 2022-23 season.
TEAM FIELD
The Cougars will compete in a 16-team field against South Alabama, Troy, UAB, Louisiana, ULM, UT Arlington, Southern Miss, Middle Tennessee, Lamar, Central Arkansas, Nicholls, North Alabama, Rice, Abilene Christian and host Louisiana Tech.
PAIRINGS
For Sunday's First Round, the Cougars will compete in groups with student-athletes from Louisiana Tech and Middle Tennessee.
Lindsay will start the day at 8:20 a.m., off No. 10 with Schiergen (8:30 a.m.), Glawe (8:40 a.m.), Weibel (8:50 a.m.) and De La Fuente (9 a.m.) following. Borow begins off No. 10 at 10 a.m., Sunday.

UP NEXT
Following the Argent Financial Classic, the Cougars will compete in two different tournaments. Houston will compete as a team at the Wake Forest Intercollegiate at Chicago Highlands Club in Westchester, Ill., on Sept. 18-19.
In a recent addition to the team's schedule, the Cougars will send four student-athletes to compete as individuals at the Papago Individual Event at Papago Golf Course in Tempe, Ariz., on Sept. 18-19.
From there, Houston will face Sam Houston in a 36-hole match play event during the Robert Steele Cup at Golfcrest Country Club in Pearland, Texas, on Oct. 3. This also is a recent addition to the Cougars' fall schedule.
