Cougar duo among Top-Five leaders after first 18 holes at Argent Financial Classic
CHOUDRANT, La. – University of Houston senior All-American Santiago De La Fuente and junior All-Conference star Wolfgang Glawe stood among the Top-Five leaders following the First Round of the Argent Financial Classic at Squire Creek Country Club on Sunday afternoon.
As a team, the Cougars posted a score of 1-over 289 to stand in fifth. Central Arkansas held the First-Round lead at 279 while Louisiana was in second at 287. Louisiana Tech and Southern Miss were tied for third at 288.
Starting his day off No. 10, De La Fuente overcame a bogey on No. 12 and returned to even par with his first birdie of the season on the par-4 13th hole. Following his final bogey of the day at No. 16, the Guadalajara, Mexico, native closed his first nine with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 17-18.
De La Fuente enjoyed a quiet second nine with a birdie on the 175-yard, par-3 fifth hole and ended his day with the team's first eagle in 2023-24 on the par-5 ninth hole.
He joined Zach Little (Central Arkansas) and Gavin Clements (Middle Tennessee) in a tie for second at 68.
Glawe started his fall season on the right note with a birdie at No. 10 and added additional birdies on No. 14 and No. 17 on his first nine holes of the day.
Although he endured three bogeys on the first five holes of his back nine, the St. Leon-Rot, Germany, native drained a birdie on the par-5 second hole and enjoyed birdies on two of his final four holes to end the round.
Glawe stood in a tie for fifth with Hugo Thyr (South Alabama), Jake Plumb (Louisiana Tech), and Nash Johnson (Central Arkansas).
Sophomores Ruben Lindsay and Hudson Weibel were tied for 56th at 76 while junior Laurenz Schiergen was tied for 75th at 78. Both Weibel and Schiergen made their Houston debuts after transferring from Oklahoma and Kansas State, respectively.
Playing as an individual, junior Jacob Borow was tied for 42nd at 74.
Middle Tennessee's Owen Stamper posted a 65 Sunday and held the individual lead.
UAB (290), ULM (290), UT Arlington (290), Rice (291) and Middle Tennessee (291) completed the Top 10.
The tournament continues with the Second Round beginning Monday morning. Schools will play 18 holes each day through Tuesday on the 7,105-yard, par-72 course.

For Monday's Second Round, the Cougars will compete in groups with student-athletes from Southern Miss and UT Arlington.
Schiergen will start the day at 11 a.m., off No. 10 with Lindsay (11:10 a.m.), Weibel (11:20 a.m.), Glawe (11:30 a.m.) and De La Fuente (11:40 a.m.) following. Borow begins off No. 10 at 7:30 a.m., Monday.

Following the Argent Financial Classic, the Cougars will compete in two different tournaments. Houston will compete as a team at the Wake Forest Intercollegiate at Chicago Highlands Club in Westchester, Ill., on Sept. 18-19.
In a recent addition to the team's schedule, the Cougars will send four student-athletes to compete as individuals at the Papago Individual Event at Papago Golf Course in Tempe, Ariz., on Sept. 18-19.
From there, Houston will face Sam Houston in a 36-hole match play event during the Robert Steele Cup at Golfcrest Country Club in Pearland, Texas, on Oct. 3. This also is a recent addition to the Cougars' fall schedule.
